Thinking of the sleeve I live in Plano I'm 27. My family isn't a huge fan of my decision. Nervous about the whole thing. I've done my 1st of 6 nutrition visits hopefully will have surgery in December. Any other young sleeves that have any advice? It's a huge decision to make at such a young age. My family thinks in taking the easy way out.

How old are you? I will tell you, the sleeve is definitely not the easy way out. YOU still have to decide what you're going to put in your mouth and what your not. YOU have to make the decision to eat this way (Protein first then vegetables). YOU have to make the commitment to take your Vitamins every day. It's still YOU that has to make the decision to use your sleeve as a weight loss tool for the rest of your life so it's not the easy way out at all.

I'm 27 I'm 238 pounds with a bmi of 40 my family doesn't really get it because my mom lost weight and kept it off with slim for life and my brother lost and keeps it off with herbalife. The only support I feel I get is from my aunt who had bypass done. I want them to know that it's not the easy way out at all and my dr told me to invite them to visits and support groups before surgery. It's just making me rethink my decision.

It's not the easy way out no one but fellow VSGer know that. No one else understands the physical and mental changes we have to go through. Those diets don't work for everyone. You'll always have a supportive family here.

I have told very few of my family and friends. My husband and my mom are hugely supportive. My sister, fairly supportive, my cousin and my aunt, kind of mixed...ranging from making sure we knew about their friend who had had weight loss surgery who had had a terrible time and looked AWFUL, (I personally think she looks great) to them calling to check on me post surgery. Friend-wise...the few I have told...either are very supportive or fun ruiners, and say stuff like...isn't that dangerous?

I was talking about this with my doctor because I was really struggling w my decision not to tell people certain people I work with, especially. He gave me the BEST answer. He said, people see this as an elective procedure. And to us, it is NOT an elective procedure. He had also told me that the procedure itself is rather benign. Especially compared with other wl procedures. Even compared with other abdominal procedures. It has the same risk as any other surgery, of course...but our relatives, especially, flip out, thinking we are removing our guts "just for fun."

I am 40. But I went on my first diet at age 10. In fact, when I was 24, I would have qualified for a sleeve had I known anything about it, but that was the year of phen-fen. Anyone remember that? Oh yeah! I am barely 5' tall, and I weighed 204 pounds (at the time) I did lose about 50 lbs, kept it off for almost 10 years...with every fad diet under the sun...but phen-fen harmed a lot of people.

So yes, I would have done this years ago, I I could have done things differently. Good luck, Scared!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
