Confusion re: Post-op Diet and stages

Recommended Posts

I'm getting confused about the differences in post op diets. There seems to be some diets that have you on liquids for a week or two and by week 3 you are starting full liquids or pureed foods or soft foods.

My sister's plan started her on pureed foods by day three and soft foods by week 2. By week three she was on well chewed solid foods.

My surgeon will have me on Clear Liquids week 1, Protein Shakes week 2 and 3, and pureed foods to solid food in week 4.

I went on line and found the Cornell bariatrics program follows the same guidelines as my sister's diet. Most every other hospital that has their plan on-line follows the longer version i.e. similar to the one I was given or even longer.

My surgery is scheduled for 7/16 in Mexico and I need to know what to do.

I know a lot of people will say to just follow what the surgeon tells you to do. I want to know what people are actually doing.

Help.......

I will be on liquids for 4 weeks, then puréed foods for 4 weeks, soft foods another 4 weeks, and finally month 4 solid foods.

Every surgeon has his own post surgery plan that they want you to follow...best advice is to do as he directs.

I was on clear liquids in the hospital, purred when I got home ( not the typical purred like no eggs you basically had to just consume without chewing) week 3 started soft foods and week 6 was normal.

babsvt

after WLS i did the following

i always drank as much as possible

i was on clear liquids the first week

then full liquids

soft foods

solids

i was not told to do a mush/pureed' stage

but as you pointed out - always follow what your NUT or doc tells you

(unless they tell you to jump off the empire state building   )

surgery being next week, going to a foreign country

its understandable to have nerves/stress come to a peak

keep coming back to the board with your questions, read responses

good luck

speedy recovery

you are on your way to a new healthier, happier, longer life

I echo what others have said. Each surgery practice has their own guidelines and they have developed these guidelines over the years based on what works best for their patients, with variations depending on the individual. My particular nutritionist had a different plan for people with a BMI over 50.

My plan was a week of liquids (full liquids started day after hospital discharge), 2 weeks of puréed foods. Soft foods, according to my NUT will go from week 3 to week 5. Certain foods like tough meat, rice, bread and Pasta shouldn't be eaten until 3 months post-op. I think most surgeon practices concur with that.

Best wishes for surgery and recovery!

Here's what my surgeon's instructions were:

Days 1-3 - Clear Liquids

Days 4-14 - Full Liquids

Weeks 3-4 - Purees

Weeks 5-6 - Soft Foods

Weeks 7+ - Full Diet

:)

Do what your surgeon says because that can cause complications.

You choose your surgeon for a reason.. I think the best thing you can do is follow his or her plan.

Because you will drive yourself crazy comparing to others plans and if you find a plan you like better how are you going to explain that to your surgeon should there be a problem.

"Well I thought your plan sucked so I followed this other girls plan I liked better"

The surgeon advances you based on how you are individually doing at each stage. You may need to stay on a certain stage longer than someone else. So important to let your doctor know if you have any difficulties or issues right away. You wouldn't give a baby a cheeseburger right away so don't expect to feed your tiny "baby tummy" any different.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
