Weight gain in hospital

Recommended Posts

So I lost 13 pounds during the week of pre-op liquid diet and was feeling pretty good. Weighed in at 226 the morning of surgery. Came home the next day at 240! What the heck? I realize they had me on IV Fluid the whole time, but 14 pounds worth? It's depressing to feel like I took a giant step backwards

Yes. It really is the fluids. Don't worry. It generally all comes off plus some within the first two weeks. It happens to all of us I think.

Same here, don't sweat it. It'll come off (and probably take some more with it :D ) in a few days.

It is definitely not a step backwards for you. You have already realized it is just IV Fluid. I told my wife (dos: 7-2) and I will suggest to you: it is best to wait 2-3 weeks before getting on the scale in order to wait for the fluids to exit the body and for some of the swelling to go down. She gave in anyways a few days ago and found her weight dropping below surgery day, but it is always good advise in order to not cause any stress over it. Anecdotally, I gained 17 lbs when in the hospital for 4 days and it took about 10 days to lose the Water weight and return to surgery weight. Then the floor fell out and the lbs melted off. You are going to do great and just need to give into the process and be a little more patient with results. Be sure to sip that Water and sip that Protein all day long to meet the minimum requirements. And go out walking as much as you can. This will help you with the release of CO2 gas and the left shoulder pain. In addition, it will help the healing process and be the start of your fitness program as a post op. Good luck!

I agree with other posters, and would like to add that NOW is the time to adjust your mindset. I had the same experience of initial gain, and just wasn't prepared for it. It's not only the IV fluids, it's also that the surgery makes you hold on to Water in general because of the trauma and your body's natural healing mechanism. Over the last 6-7 months, I have learned a little patience. Before surgery, I would get discouraged when I didn't lose weight rapidly based on my decreased calorie intake, so I would always just quit. Honestly, the major difference between pre and post op is that I was FORCED to stick with it. As I saw how I lost over time, I realized what it's going to take for me to lose weight. Now I can certainly eat more and I don't think my body would force me eat enough less to continue losing weight. Now it is mostly me with a little help from my sleeve, and the fact that in the early days I learned a new habit and a new way of thinking. I believe that's the major contributor of success for me.

This is a time when your body is healing it's self. Your stomach is swollen and retaining fluids which is really a good thing. Are you getting in as much fluids as you can? That will help release the excess Fluid and reduce inflammation of your stomach. The weight will melt away like previous posters mentioned. It is all of our experience and fears from failing in the past surfacing. Your emotional side is activated right now. So do some self soothing and tell yourself it's normal for this and it will go away and the lbs will start to just melt away..... :P This is true.....

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
