Success beyond 2-3 years after surgery, IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE? Are any of you out there?

Hello;

Yes it is possbile. If you are willing to make life changes. The sleeve allows you to lose the weight but maintaining is a matter of not slipping into old habits. While I am at surgeons goal, I am about 10 lbs over my personal goal. Why? Because I graze and eat around my sleeves restrictions.

To newbies - you alone are the master of your own long term success.

I love my sleeve and have no regrets...even at 2 years 10 months out.

Success beyond 2-3 years after surgery, REALLY POSSIBLE?

abj

i am 19 months post WLS

maintaining my 105 lbs these past 7 months :)

the way i used to look at it was - why wouldn't i continue my success...............

you must continue your new life/eating/drinking ways for the rest of your life

if you do that - you will be a success story too

please don't even think about possible/maybe problems for the future

you've got enough to worry/deal with now!!!!!! ;)

live in the present

good luck

kathy

I'm three years out. We have a vet board here and have several 2-4 years out that visit regularly.

Your sleeve is what you make of it, so yes, success is possible if you are willing to change.

The sleeve does one guaranteed thing: it removes 85% of your stomach and gives you restriction.

Not even the loss of hunger is guaranteed, and I've seen folks report that it returns the farther out from surgery you get.

Everything that made you obese is still there. Obesity is not just about eating large portions and poor genetics. In most cases it's also a sign of disordered eating, and whatever your particular issue happens to be will still be there even with a sleeved stomach. So it's really, really important to take advantage of that early period where eating is tough and you don't enjoy food as much to learn how to break those bad habits and cope differently.

If you eat around your sleeve, you will regain or not lose or not achieve goal.

If you make permanent changes, not just in how you eat but in how you deal with food, you can have long term success.

This is not about making goal, as crazy as that sounds. The trick isn't losing weight - that's actually much easier with a sleeve than it's ever been for me on any diet before. The trick is learning how to balance real life with good food choices once you're at goal, so that you can stay there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
