Protein bars- helpful or harmful?

Recommended Posts

So, I know Protein Bars if eaten as a Meal Replacement, are probably great but given their calorie content is comparable to a candy bar and some taste like candy bars (oh yeah brand), I could see where these are just added calories in the day.

I just bought a bunch of types to try for traveling (which I still hope they will serve their purpose and eliminate meals out) but I find I want them as a dessert and tat is not their intended use.

What are your thoughts- are Protein Bars friend or foe?

My doctor eventually wants me to replace Protein Shakes with Protein Bars (which I'm not happy about, bc I'm quite comfortable w/ my shakes). But if I have a shake for a meal, I'd assume a Protein Bar would be a meal as well. ??

Every time I looked at protein bars I wasn't impressed - something on the nutrition label turned me off, usually too high sugar. I actually bought one once and hated it, very sticky and Gummy on my teeth.

And then I discovered Quest bars. I've only tried the Peanut Butter so far but bought three other kinds just a few hours ago. I really like them and they're not too sweet. I highly recommend trying these if you haven't already.

Quest bars = crack habit at its best!!

They are definitely the least "candy bar" like Protein bar I've found but still easy to eat and can be a habit if its not monitored.

I was looking at Protein bars yesterday, I was surprised at how many calories the high protein content ones were. I guess I would only eat these if I was in a desperate situation

I had to stop eating them except in extreme cases like traveling. It was also funny, I had to leave early one morning and grabbed one and ate 1/2 of it and stuffed the rest of it in its open wrapper in my purse, literally 2 weeks later I found the leftovers in my purse and tasted it and it tasted as fresh as when I had first opened it! I was shocked at how many preservatives that must have taken to get it to last like that! I would stay away from it if you can and try to get your Protein in other ways! Just my experience! (They are addictive)

My surgeons say at some point we're supposed to wean off of Protein shakes (and I guess Protein bars as well) and get our protein primarily from food. Both seem like very efficient and convenient ways to get protein, I have to wonder are they really that bad?

Although I can only eat a 1/4 of a Quest bar at a time....they're great in a pinch!

Oh Yeah just came out with a bar similar to the Quest bar!

Don---- what is the carbohydrate gram count on the Quest bars-- I have been looking for one lower in carbs and haven't found one I like.

Cinnamon Roll - 24g (17g fiber)

Apple Pie - 24g (18g fiber)

strawberry Cheesecake - 25g (17g fiber)

(There are several other flavors, these are the ones I bought today)

As I understand it, if you subtract the Fiber from the carbs you end up with net carbs which in each of these cases is pretty acceptable.

If the concept of net carbs is hooey, then yeah the carbs are ridiculous!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
