Anyone have temporary post op acid reflux?

Recommended Posts

I am noticing that most people end up with acid reflux after surgery and have to be on a long term PPI but I'm wondering how many people had it short term and were able to get off the PPI or who just never had an acid reflux issue after surgery.

In the beginning I had no acid at all. Once I started on an expanded diet, I found that I if I eat too much variety at once or certain foods ( one piece of salami kills me), I will have acid issues. I take a ppl, but I can skip it it altogether if I keep my diet clean and simple. Btw, I'm eight months out. Hope this is helpful.

I have had it for years but after my surgery, 7/2, the Dr did say to take pepcid two times a day for the first 6 months. I'm hoping mine goes away permanently in a few months.

Yes I did, had a problem when in the hospital wearing my C-pap mask coming up choking, it last a short time and I haven't had that happen anymore and I was sleeved June 19

I never had acid reflux until after this surgery. I was sleeved on 8-21-12 and had it from day 1, my surgeon kept saying it would subside, I was on 3 Famotidine (prescription strength Pepcid) until 10-8-12. So, it lasted all but 7 weeks after surgery. I remember the exact day I didn't need it any longer because it was so bad and then all of a sudden just stopped. After that day in October, I've only needed to take maybe one pill a month due to something I may eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
