9 days post-op drinking question

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done last week. I can seemingly easily tolerate liquids in good amounts drank quickly. I can drink a 12 oz. Protein Shake or 2 cups of broth in minutes without pain or bloating or even feeling full. Is this normal and/or ok? The surgeon said I should sip the Protein shake over a two hour period.

I've read on the forums here that calorie free liquids are ok in quantity and that they won't stretch out the sleeve, etc.

I just wonder why my surgeon insists I sip everything.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, your experience is completely different than mine was. I could only get 2 oz of Protein Shake in a 20-30 min time frame at that stage. I would be careful tho as you are healing up and may not have full sensation at work yet in your tum. Take it slow regardless and check in with your doc for some informed feedback.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks.

pudding and yogurt are still challenging, so I know the nerves are working.

I just wanted to be reassured I'm not doing anything wrong.

I'm 3 days post op and it took me 3 hours to get down 8oz of my shake. Everyone is different. Just double check with your dietician or doctor if your concerned.

I'm a week and a half out and I can finish an 8oz shake in about 20 minutes. I can feel my stomach complain if I drink to quickly. Just take your time and sip slowly, there's no rush.

Thank you.

The Protein shakes are pretty easy. Most cold liquids do need to be drank slowly because they cause a little discomfort. But, the warm liquids, Soups, etc. go down so easily.

I guess my main concern was that I drank 2 cups of miso broth last night with a packet of cream of chicken Soup mixed in in less than 10 minutes with no discomfort or sense of being full and correlated that to "my stomach's still too big and I'll gain may weight back..." I'm sure some of you can relate.

A lot of your nerves are still numb. From what I've heard, you don't really feel "full" until dense Protein. Like I said, I'm only 3 days out. I don't feel full either, but I'm also not hungry so I do force myself to drink.

I am the same way!! I think I could eat anything! I have a 1/4 cup broth done in 3 sips then feel so unsatisfied. Someone reassured me it will be different on solids. I hope so cuz I've never felt like I was full. Protein goes easy too. I try hard to go slow as I think it can damage the staple line if we overdo.

If ur surgeon says sip, u should take his advice, he probably has more experience of this surgery than we do :-) At ur stage, everything in ur stomach is numb and healing. Just because u can get all that liquid amd dont feel pain doesn't necessarily mean u r doing the right thing. As the feeling comes back, trust me, the restriction will kick in and u r likely to be in pain if u keep swigging away. U dont feel full just now because u r drinking liquid that doesnt stay long in ur new pouch. Listen to ur doc, give ur stomach a chance to heal. Protein is tougher to get down as u get on to soft foods then solids. Remember, this isn't a sprint, u r in this for the long haul :-)))) Good luck!

Well my surgeon said I would probably need to sip for the first couple weeks but if I could drink more it was OK as long as I didn't gulp since gulping puts sit in the stomach. Everyone has different levels of swelling so the answer won't be the same for everyone. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
