Anyone had back issues before surgery...

Recommended Posts

My back hurts anytime i stand or or walk for 5 minutes or more. I get a tingly feeling and hurts really bad. Anyone had those issues, if so did it go away after the weight lose.

I suffered from back problems pre-op. Had really bad back spasms, low back pain where I couldn't stand sometimes for longer that 10 mins especially in high heels. Had joint pain too. Three months after surgery i noticed back & joint problems subsiding. I'm 8 mons post-op now and I no longer feel back or joint pain.

Yes. I suffered from serious back pain and took two different meds for it. Since I've lost the weight I have no back pain and am on no meds at all!!! Best decision ever for me! Good luck to you and prayers up for you, I know how you feel :)

I have chronic low back pain too. It got better post-op, but since incorporating exercise, it has come back. It isn't as bad as pre-op, but still bothersome. I'm going to start going to PT soon.

Yep. 7 ruptured discs here. I woke up daily with back pain, numbness to my legs. Some mornings I would have to drag my leg. After working a 12 hr shift, I would struggle to get in my SUV. As the weight started to come off, those pains are gone. Every now and then I feel a twinge in my hip and worry it will come back, but so far so good.

6 herniated disc and a permantly (cut) damaged sciatic nerve. Two lumbar spine surgeries. Back pain gets better with weight loss...no doubt about it. The less weight you carry in your stomach, the less strain on your back. It is my main reason for getting the sleeve.

I have had back surgery as well and it has started acting up again recently which is part of what prompted me to start this weight loss journey. I haven't been sleeved yet but I'm hoping to be before the end of the summer. Fingers crossed that it helps with the back problems.

I'm still fairly early pre-op but yes, have dealt with serious chronic back pain for about 10 years. I had a lumbar fusion about 4 years ago and take meds daily for it. I'm 3 months post-op and it's different, for sure, but not gone. I certainly don't feel well enough to stop my meds. I am down a little over 50 lbs. My pain management and primary care doctors say to give it some time and a little more weight loss before I try anything different, as far as medications.

I will say the tingly sensation sounds like nerve issues to me, which is different than just general back pain. Have you gotten that checked out? It's important that you do so because ignoring it can create long term issues. I have permanent nerve damage to my sciatic nerve from ignoring the sore and tingly sensation in my lower back and down my leg for about 2 years, on and off. If I had gotten it addressed early on, it's likely I wouldn't have the extent of the issues I have now.

I suffer from kyphosis and have arthritis T6-T10. I am two weeks post-op and have lost 52 lbs. since beginning my pre-op diet. My back pain has lessened but not gone away. My target weight requires me to lose another 175 lbs. As I begin exercising and drop more weight I'm hoping for a significant reduction in pain.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
