Hi my name is Carrie. I am new to the sight but have been working on getting a gastric sleeve since April. I was approved last week! I almost threw up when they told me. Lol! I was not a heavy child but as I went through college and got married it seemed like all I did was put on weight. I tried weight watchers and Atkins and nutritionists and it seemed like I would lose a little bit of weight and then I would stall and then I would go back to eating the same way again. I have been through a lot in my life and stress is a big factor. My father died when I was nineteen and my mother died the day after my twin boys were born. I have a twin brother and half brothers and a half sister. My family is small. My husband is not supportive of this surgery. I feel all alone because of that. I was diagnosed with gastritis and that has put off my surgery because they thought I had h.pylori but I don't. My surgery date is suppose to be August 5. My husband wants to leave for vacation on Aug 9th. Idk if that is possible but I am going to try. We are going to NC and we live in NJ. We are driving. God help me! I am glad I have found this sight.

Congratulations, and welcome! Although a road trip is doable on Day 4, PLEASE know that you will be tired, low energy, etc. - and you'll need to prepare and plan for how to meet your liquid and nutrition needs while you are away! As long as you aren't planning an skydiving, or tons of walking, you'll be fine. Be sure to get out of the car periodically, though, to walk around - that's quite a drive!!

Not a good idea at all. Can't you vacation before the surgery so all can enjoy it? You are supposed to walk every hour after surgery to prevent blood clots. If he won't budge on his vacation plans then you need to postpone surgery for after you get back. The first week after is the worse, pain wise, getting used to sipping liquids, getting your Protein needs met. Will not be a vacation for you but just a nightmare.

Hi there Carrie. I am fairly new as well. I am in nj as well. Me & my husband just went to an informative seminar. We are just starting the process. My story is very similar to yours. I was a small child until I hit puberty. In the last 10 years I have gained 100 lbs. I have a son that I can't keep up with and have started having physical complications from the weight. Where in NJ are you located? I am in Union Beach which is in monmouth county. If you want to talk to someone local chat with me anytime.

Christina

As long as he knows he will be the one driving I dont see an issue. Nj to nc is far but easily a day trip so walking shouldnt be an issue as you can easily walk before you leave and when you arrive in NC. I was back to work at day 5 but could have easily gone back at day 3 or 4. That being said everyone is different. If your going to relax at the beach on your vaca I see no problem but if you are thrill seekers id wait

In my opinion traveling that soon is a really bad idea. My surgeon wants no travel for 3-4 weeks in case you need him. You will have many opportunities to travel when it is safer and more enjoyable. Just my 2 cents ;)

Imo as well, I agree w the poster who Said, if u can't postpone the vaca, then postpone the surgery. Uve come to far to let a travel plan get in the way of ur healing nd ur life (clots or unforeseen circumstances). If ur hubby is not on board w u having it, then its going to be a mess when u guys travel, esp w twins. Idk their ages but I traveled from va to al driving, nd my girls are 16 nd 8 and it was a mess, bc its a long drive and in a car, everyones restless. We made stops only when necessary and in ur case, as they've stated, ur not gonna feel like twin drama, driving drama, trying to eat drink nd be merry ;) on ur trip, bc ull need support for when u have to stop or stretch or whatever, it just seems like if he don't want u doing it, he'd get po'd having to tend to ur needs on the trip nd the kids. Idk, its ultimately ur choice Nd I pray for u all the way, but really think about the entire problems a trip causes when ur healthy. Can't imagine riding that long a trip right after major surgery! I've not had that surgery yet, still hoop jumpn but I've read so much from my fellow posters who have had it. Pray about it sweetheart nd make sure that a vaca so soon after is a good idea, esp since u nd ur hubby are at odds about it. God bless whatever choice u make:))) Dee Dee

Thanks everyone. I will talk to him tonight (hubby). I may have to stay home and let him take the twins to NC. I think his mom is going. I don't want to wait because I am a teacher and have to go back to work in September. I will pray I choose the right thing.

I agree that travel so soon wouldn't be in your best interest! The risk of clots (DVT) will be higher with travel. I know it can be hard to focus on you. It has been very hard for me to focus on myself! This is your time, do what you need to do to become the healthiest mom/wife/teacher that you can be!! It doesn't last forever, when you are healed and feeling wonderful it will be worth the sacrifice. I wish you well :-)

On day 4 I would have probably cried if I had kids to tend to. Then going on a trip with them? Nope I am 9 days post op and still have trouble bending over to tie my shoes. But again everyone is different. Good luck in your journey and I sure hope you can convince him to be on board with you. If not now, maybe after he sees tat you are getting healthier.

I told him my surgery date and he said we won't be able to go to NC in an annoyed tone. I think we are going to just stay in NJ but idk yet.

Can I just say? I'm totally not thrilled with your husband's lack of support. What happened to wedding vows? Support? Love?

Unfortunately, unsupportive spouses are not uncommon...you can do a search on here and likely find some good advice posted from others who have been in your shoes.

it sounds like it is time for a sit-down with your hubby to see if you can unearth some of the underlying issues/concerns...this surgery can bring forth a lot of difficult topics and feelings for the patient as well as loved ones...

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
