Complications

Recommended Posts

Just got home after being in ER. I passed out at home, and fell on tile flooring, got lip and head lacerations. My diagnosis was dehydration, low blood sugar and urinary track infection.. I am so light headed i can't move my head fast. I do start on pureed diet at noon tomorrow.

This is something I would definately bring up to your surgeon. I would say to start full Water intake. This does not sound good expecially since you have not even got to the surgery yet? Good luck to you.

I hope you feel better soon. Sounds quite scary to pass out like that. I always drink skim milk if I feel thirsty and hungry at the same time. That way I know I'm getting some calories to keep the blood sugar up a bit. What did the ER doctor suggest?

I went through something similar - you need to let your surgeon know. Dehydration is very serious - I was in the hospital for about 3 months total because of it.

Something's that helped me was an IV bag (nurse came to the house once a day).

They had to go in and do a few dilations sessions to get me stretched out a little.

Please work with you dr.

They told me to drink cranberry juice and since my blood pressure fluctuated the doctor told me to slowly sit up or stand up. Today I am on my third week and suppose to be starting my purée diet but I'll be delayed due to my injury.

How many weeks was it after surgery? That would be horrible to experience what you did.

Hopefully, because you were dx with dehydration they rehydrated you with fluids via IV? If not I'd be mad.. You need to be hydrated and if your sick you need instant fluids.

They did give an IV and when released I was told to drink Water but with my sleeve its more difficult to drink the amount I had been before surgery.

The heat of summer may not be helping you retain the Water you drink. Get as much liquid in as you can but I suggest you incorporate a cup of full sodium chicken broth every day. More salt may help you retain better. Get well soon!

Mine started about a week after surgery! It was just hard for me to drink and what I did get in almost immediately came out. Because of that it snowballed into other complications.

So yes try and focus on drinking what they told you. If you can't stomach it - I found the lemon Gatorade helped - or just plain Water. Try different temperatures of liquids. Sometimes hot worked better, sometimes cold worked. There was even a time where I lived off of icee's. I did whatever I could to stay hydrated.

Hopefully this is just a minor complication, and you will get through it quickly. Just remember if you feel you can't get your self hydrated, you need to ask your Dr. to do so through an IV.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
