Can someone explain why eating and drinking at the same time is forbidden?

Easiest and most succinct way to explain why not to eat and drink at the same time: it hurts!

It is uncomfortable and I get the foamies if I drink too soon after eating. I usually wait 45-60 minutes unless I lose track of time.

I am almost 2 years out and I am just now able to take a few sips after I eat. Depending on what I eat (water after eating carbs works out a lot better than Water after protein). but the biggest thinkg I find is that I am hungry a lot faster when I drink right after eating. Water just washes the food right out of my stomach. Just my two cents.

Thank you so much. Welcome to the losers bench. When I was in the purée stage I would have a lot of cream Soups. If you are staying in a hotel that has a microwave I would buy some Soups like split pea, Tomato, broccoli cheddar and such. I didn't have a hard time with milk products like some people do after surgery so I ate a lot of cottage cheese, yogurt, and puddings. When you go out to eat there aren't a whole lot of choices for you other then the soups.

It will seem like it takes forever to lose that 100 pounds, but when you get there you will not be able to believe how fast the time went by. I can't believe it's already been almost two years since my surgery.

I find now that when I see women that are the size that I used to be now my heart aches for them because I remember that feeling of constantly thinking about my weight. There wasn't a minute that would go by that I didn't have my weight on my mind. I just saw a woman tonight that is about my height and she is about the same size I was and the same build...like her weight was carried just the way I did. I felt so strongly that I wanted to go up to her and tell her about the surgery, but then I know how I would have felt if someone would have done that to me, so I never do.

I wish you luck on your journey...and try to remember that you will hit stalls, it is completely normal, and even if you lose slowly...it is actually better for your health, as well as your skin. I lost pretty slowly and I don't have any issues with skin other then a little wobbly around the arms, and of course the girls and tummy...but that's more from having kids then from my weight loss. I am getting plastics in the fall and I can't wait to post after pictures, so look for those in October! :) have a great time on vacation!

Seems like the topic was covered quite well. It does take quite an adjustment to the not drinking rule. Really, though, your stomach just isn't big enough to hold food and drink together which can make you sick. Plus, it will wash the few nutrients we get away especially if you are taking your vitamins/calcium with your meals. We don't malabsorb like the bypass but we certainly don't get enough food in to get our nutrients strictly from that.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
