I am 1week post op and doing great . I get in all my Protein, liquids, have no nausea, hardly any pain, pretty good energy level...lost 12lbs since surgery....where am I going with this? Today my emotions got the best of me and became obsessed with " what if I develop a leak". I know the likely hood is low, but I am second guessing everything today. Ugh, can anyone talk me out of this funk?

You know what to do, your surgeon explained the symptoms you would experience. You are doing great, you have this. Just don't ignore the symptoms and listen to your doctor, leaks are not the norm they are the exception. Enjoy your new lease on life.

Hang in there. My nurse told me that we get a lot of estrogen released when we lose fat so trars and emotions are normal. You are doing great. Follow the plan your surgeon gives you which is meant to prevent leaks.

My understanding is that leaks are actually rare, something like 1 in 100. They also subside significantly with time. You could actually call your surgeon and ask about her/his stats of leaks--chances are, they are very low. Your anxiety, however, that is a different thing. Very natural. I freak out occasionally for different reasons (which I don't want to share for fear of scaring you), but I just try to breathe, and let myself know that I would be able to handle it IF it happens. No need to stress yourself out while you're healing (I know, easier said than done!). I hope this helps! All the best to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
