having difficulty lap band three days ago

Recommended Posts

I am 34 years old and had the Lap Band procedure done this past Thursday (12/28/06). I was doing really well the first night of surgery and thought "gee this will be a pickle" since then, however, I have had alot of pain when moving around and the gas pain was unbearable. I still kept moving and walking to help pass the gas, but havent had much success. The gas pain is still pretty bad. last night I began to feel like I had a terrible stomac ache and began to feel nausseous. I called my doctor this morning, after suffering the whole night and he said he thinks I picked up a stomach bug and put me on compozine, which seemed to help so far. he wanted me to come back to the hospital, but I HATE hospitals. I am worried that something is wrong and somewhat discouraged that I am not feeling better already. I was looking forward to going back to work on Tuesday. How did everyone else do, am I totally abnormal? When was everyone able to go back to work? Happy New Years to eeryone.

:cry

Hey Skinnymom...

I know that if my surgeon wanted me to the hospital; I'd be there without a doubt!!! Don't be afraid of what they find; get there and get it taken care of before it escalates to something worse. You're not doing yourself any good by fearing the hospital. It's a far better place for you to be when you're sick, than at home!!! Trust me, you'll be in good hands.

Skinnymom it's better to be safe than sorry, it's probably just gas, but you'll be happier to know that's all it is. I had one night hospital stay, but now my doctor does the surgery as an outpatient.

Let us know how it goes.

Happy New Year to you too.

I also agree. If he said to go to the hosp. please go. You don't want to risk your band. Plus, if something is wrong you would want to get it taken care of ASAP and not down the line. You are in my thougts. Keep us posted!!

and Good luck!!

Hi skinnymom,

I had my LB on 12/26 and experienced the same pain as you the first night I was home (2nd night after the procedure). The gas is expected b/c as my doctor explained to me, your lungs and other organs are filled with air in order to do the procedure. After the removal of the anesthesia tube, this air stays in and walking helps aleviate it, as well as burping. The nausea is also a normal side effect from the surgery. Compozine is often prescribed as well as pain killers, in my case vicodin, upon the release from the hospital. Compozine prevents vomitting which can cause the band to slip (excessive vomitting). Following your doctor's advice and going back in the hospital would be wise, just in case there is something wrong, but what you are experiencing is normal.

Best of luck and Happy New Year

Had my lap band 11/27 went home 11/28 suffered all night with diarrhea, chest pain and sob, bariatric nurse called 9am 11/29 and she sent me to the ER..after I told her what was going on. Went back into the hospital 11/29 until 11/30. Could have been a blood clot in my lung or band slippage nobody knew until I went to ER. Came to find out I had pneumonia. Had IV antibiotics. Until you go to see a Dr you can never know.. I know I was very sick...

I was able to go back to work 5 days post op without any problem. Have you tried the gasx strips? They seem to help me. Good luck.

hi everyone - thanks for the cheering and the well wishes - I am doing alot better the past two days withthe physical pain . My port isnt hurting as much and even my left side pain is less (although still there). I am also finally getting hungry - but completely SICK of chicken broth , crystal light, ices, and hot cocoa!!!! going crazy and i still have 6 more days of liquids. Dont know how Ill get through this part. Cant wait to get to mushies!!!!! still only down 13 lbs and putting very little into my body - wondering why the weight isnt just falling off at this point. would understand if I was easting and the band wasnt tightened yet that I wouldnt lose weight - but almost all of what I am eating is ) calories. Oh yeah - besides the protien shakes I forgot to mention - but I can only get 8 oz of that down a day - so I should still be losing weight. ant ideas? Hope everyone else id doing well and thanks for everything - I am so glad to have the support from all you guys!!! thanks!

I couldn't stomach any more chicken or beef broth after surgery, so my DW stopped at the Chinese food restaurant and got me some egg drop Soup. We strained out the floating stuff but left the tiny pieces of chicken in the broth. It was fantastic and high in Protein.< /p>

Also the Campbell's Select Soups are yummy, once you're cleared for full liquids. Good luck to you, fellow bandster.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
