Hello everyone. What an awsome forum. I'm so glad to have found you. I am 40 years old and have been slightly overweight all my adult life, but have really ballooned over the past 10 years, mostly I believe due to thyroid and hormone problems. I, too, have tried just about every diet out there and a few made up ones of my own, without success. 2 years ago my best friend had a RNY done and although she had great success with the weight loss, the complications were massive and because I was by her side the whole time, I saw first hand that I did not want to go through that no matter what. On top of the fact that I am an RN and have an aversion against cutting out parts of my body. But my curiosity was peaked so I started doing research on weight loss surgeries. That is when I came across the lap band. The more I learned, the more I liked. I was so excited. Then I found out that my insurance would pay for RNY but not the lap band. It was "too new". This was a year ago. Since then I have moved from Florida to Tn and have a new insurance that says they will pay for it. Which is why I am here now.

I have made the decision to go for it. My first MD appointment is Jan. 17th. I have full support of my awsome hubby and the rest of my family just says "cool". I guess they know that as an RN, I have enough medical knowledge to not venture into something like this without researching it thouroughly. Anyhow, I just thought I would intro myself and jump in because I just may need a little support from some "old pro's" and maybe I can eventually contribute to someone elses success.

Sign me,

Taking the first step.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
