Help Me! Drowning in BROTH!

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all!! I need some help. I have surgery in 2 days and I've been on full liquids for almost 3 weeks. Today and tomorrow I do just Clear Liquids. I'm a cheer coach at Cheer Camp at Great Wolf Lodge right now and I am MISERABLE!!! I brought cartons of the Swanson's chicken broth and I can't even choke it down. What can I do to survive until my surgery? What's the whole purpose of "clear liquids" anyway!?! Please help this Cheer Coach!!!!

You can do sugar free popsicles, Jello, and Crystal Light. I did the same thing with the broth and wanted to gag! I only had a one day clear liquid and I believe it is to clear everything out so you are "clean" for surgery.

I had two days clear liquid and did low sugar apple juice, icees, crystal light and some Jello. I could not manage any broth. I find it freaking vile! I could barely choke down jello either but it filled me a little

Hi. I will be going on liquids starting Monday, surgery is the following Monday on the 8 th. I know I'll be facing the same issues as you all are but just wanted to share, the doctor told me the reason for liquids a few days pre op is because they don't want your stomach working trying to process food when you go in for surgery. I too, will have Jello, sugar free pops, sugar free drinks, chicken broth( except I bought the better than billion in a jar you mix). I read it was better so I tested it out already. It is better than a box or can to me. Just remember it will be all worth it in the end.

Also another reason is to shrink down your liver so that it is not in the way to do the surgery. Now with that said, I am on a low carb diet to shrink my liver and only have to have cleAr liquids the day before surgery. Mine is not until sept 5th and I am required to lose 37lbs before them. I've lost 14lb in 10 days.

I am on Day 3 of my pre-op diet and I needed something savory, so I made this recipe:

chicken broth (box Swanson's)

1/2 jalepeno (seeds removed)

Ginger Root (about a one inch piece, peeled)

1/2 bunch of cilantro

6 basil leaves

Squeeze of lime

Drop of fish sauce (optional)

Warm the broth a bit first then add the ingredients. Let it simmer for 10 minutes and strain.

Delicious!

I am on day 6 of my two week pre-op liquid diet and I have had a cup of chicken broth everyday at "dinner time" to give me something savory in order to take a break from the shakes. I did doctor the broth a little. I sauteed some carrots, celery and onions in a saucepan with the tiniest bit of butter until they browned slightly, then added in several cans of Swanson's low sodium broth and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes. Then drain the solids out. I kept it in a pitcher for a couple of days and when I needed something savory, I would have a cup of this. So far I am down 7 lbs in 6 days! I'm very excited for my surgery which will be on the 8th!

Oh, yeah! I didn't think about that...now I'm gonna try it with beef broth! :-)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
