I'm not from Boston, but I am from the suburbs of Boston. I'm going to have my surgery at Emerson Hospital in Concord with Dr. Lautz.

I'm doing pretty good. Actually, I'm on top of the moon right now because I got a surgery date yesterday of July 8th. That's a lot sooner than I expected but I jumped on it because I am so ready for the new me.

Good luck to you!

Hi Sue, congrats. How have you been feeling?

Hi Taylor, I've been feeling pretty good. Been going on 3 mile walks every morning since about day 7 post-op. Have a little acid-reflux issue going on, but I guess that happens pretty frequently to people.

Good luck to you! August will be here before you know it!

Sue, That doesn't sound too bad. I am worried that I am going to fail at this just like everything else. I am worried that I shouldn't get the sleeve and I should get the bypass. I don't know why I am doubting my decision all of a sudden. I hope you are still feeling well. Please keep me posted about how you are doing.

As long as you follow the guidelines you cannot fail. I am 4 weeks out as of yesterday. I am down 12 lbs since surgery. Compared to others, I'm a slower loser, but who cares! It's 12 lbs that would still be on me had I not had the surgery.

As far as this vs bypass, that is something you need to chat with your doctor about. From the group's I've gone to, it seems they are leaning more towards the sleeve these days - less risk, quicker recovery, you don't have the malabsorption issues as with the bypass, etc.

It's scary, but I still think for me it was a good decision. Good luck!!

Any of you from the Worcester MA area? I have been going through all the classes and appointments since November 2012 and still having test done I am hoping to have my surgery before the end of the year. I am new to this area and have only my husband up here with me. I sure could use a buddy to talk to about this surgery. I am going to UMASS Dr. Paragini is my surgeon, he seem nice enough.

Well, welcome to Worcester! I feel I have been very fortunate and have not had any real problems with my surgery. I was in the hospital for one night. When I woke up from surgery I was a bit nauseous from the anesthesia, but that happened with my gallbladder too, so I wasn't too surprised. Very tired that night. They woke me up every 2 hours to take my blood pressure. Nurse got me up around 5 or 5:30 to go for a walk. Felt pretty good that morning. Around 4:30 or so, right before discharge, started to feel really bad. It was the gas trying to find an escape route! Lasted for a few hours maybe. Came home and went to bed. Next morning, day 2 post-op, felt good. Moving a little slow, but otherwise good. By day 3 I was walking 1.5 miles a day and by day 7 I was walking a little over 3 miles a day. This coming Monday I will be 10 weeks out.

Good luck on your journey and if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
