Anyone not drinking protien shakes or eating protien bars?

Recommended Posts

Since surgery I have not had a shake or bar. All my protien is from meats. How bad is that for me. Losing weight quickly without too much muscle loss.

How far out from surgery are you?

That's fantastic! As long as you're meeting your Protein goals I don't think it much matters. Getting your protein from real food is the goal for most people anyway. There are some patients who are encouraged by their doctors to discontinue Protein Shakes as soon as they can eat meat. Personally I eat bars because I have a sweet tooth and they're convenient. I get 70-90 grams of protein a day with about half from bars/powders and the other half from real food.

I am 15 weeks out...I have never been able to do the shakes. I tried every brand & type & flavor out there...hate the taste & smell! GNC Total Lean I tried recently & think I could possibly handle, but they are very expensive. I would have to drive 1 1/2 hr to even buy them from where I live. I do the Nature Valley & Kellogg 10 gram Protein breakfast/snack bars only...I can't stomach the other types. I struggle with getting in my protein & fluids still, which isn't good. I just keep trying. Best of luck to you.

Sounds like you're doing fine.

I have some bars I like. Just haven't eaten many. Also getting most of my Protein from chicken, fish & yogurt.

I bought a couple shakes today just for convenience when working long shifts with not much time to eat.

I drink one 8oz Protein Shake daily in the morning. its the whey Protein Powder mixed w 8 oz of milk and covers 32 grams of my daily Protein. the remainder i get from fish, chicken, yogurt & nuts. So my protein intake now is 65-75 grams daily. I very rarely eat meet as I find it too heavy for me now. But as long as you get in the required daily protein, especially from real food, doc said that's all that matters.

I would think Protein from natural food is better tan these highly processed Proteins but have nothing to back that theory up. I love the Premier Protein shakes at costco so that's my Breakfast and 30 grams of protein. The rest is from fish, chicken, Beans, Greek yogurt, cheese and nuts. Guess it depends on your calorie goals since I could easily go over 1200-1400 if I am not mindful of what I am eating so I like a self contained meal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
