Do most people have drains?

Recommended Posts

It varies by surgeon, like a lot (seriously, a LOT) of things about WLS.

My surgeon used to use them but apparently doesn't use them much at all anymore, along with Foley catheters.

My surgeon used one, I was not a fan. It's an extra precaution.

For me the drain was the worst part of recovery. I had it in for a week and was scared that I was going to pull it out in my sleep. I will add that I VERY squimish.

I just had my drain removed yesterday and I feel like a new woman. My drain had a safety pin on the plastic loop clip part. My hospital gave me a lanyard and told me to clip it to the lanyard when showering. I clipped it to my pants or shirt to get through the days. I swear it was like instant recovery when they removed it. I can even eat and drink more now. It gets better.

Got mine out today. You were exactly right about the feeling, I feel set free! The lanyard was a great idea. I finally figured out to take one of my rubber band type head band and put it around my neck and pinned it while I was in the shower. I just safety pinned it to my underwear the rest of the time. Came home and put on some comfy/stretchy shorts that came in (Zulily) since my surgery. Feeling spunky!!!

Bless your heart if you had to have the drain for two weeks. I know that had to be aggravating.

I do not know what the hell all your surgeons were doing to you all! I had no drain or foley. I am a nurse and understand the reason for the drain for 1 or 2 days not 2weeks! God bless you all

My was draining 50-60cc every 24 hrs, they wouldn't pull it until the output was under 30cc every 24 hrs for 3 days. I felt soooo free when it was removed..

I had one while in the hospital, but they took it out before I was discharged.

I only had mine (drain) for a week. I believe I would have had to be dragged out of there if the Dr said it couldn't come out!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
