I am on Synthroid... I now take 150mcg daily... I actually recently hit a nasty stall and I had a ton of symptoms for before I was on Synthroid... My Dr had me do some blood work and I was right my TSH was elevated... He increased my dose and I am now starting to feel much better!! And my stall seems to have stopped! I have Hashimoto's so I will really always be on Thyroid meds no matter how much weight I lose...

I've been on Synthroid for hypothyroidism for about 5 years now. I know there's a rumor about how it makes it more difficult to lose weight. It was difficult before surgery, but I have had no problem since having the sleeve. I just had my bloodwork done to check the levels, I'm hoping to lessen the dosage.

I'm hoping everyone who reads this thread is clear - hypothyroidism makes it difficult to lose weight. ALL the medications for hypothyroidism make it easier to lose weight than not being medicated.

Your medication may not fully address your hypothyroidism - so you may still find it harder to lose weight than before you needed the medication, but the medication itself is NOT making it harder to lose weight.

Many doctors seem hell bent on giving their patients the minimum medication they can get away with, partly because low-level hypothyroidism symptoms are "vague" and partly because there are other health consequences to too much thyroid medication - like heart palpitations and osteoporosis.

Lowering your medication without reference to current blood test results showing how well your thyroid is functioning is likely to lead to weight gain, not loss.

Some of the responses in this thread sound like a few of us are convinced the medication itself causes weight gain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
