I am on thyroid medication- have been for years for hypothyroidism. I have been curious if I can expect changes in dosage after surgery.

I am on 100 mil of Levothyroxine.. Found out I had Hasimoto's disease in 2011. Doing great no probs. Was sleeved May 16th 2013. Down 36 pounds. Actually saw my pcp today because of leg swelling the past week... More likely due to not taking my Levothyroxine daily :( so its very important!

I have had hypothyroidism for 12 years. Prior to surgery I was on 150 mcg of synthroid. At month 4 post up I was increased to 175. About one month ago (5 months post op) my TSH was still elevated. Doc wants to repeat my labs.

Yes I'm on the thyroid medicine still because of a couple of reasons. 1. Being that it runs in my family. 2. I've only been on it 2 years or so since my levels got a little crazy & 3. When they found that I had a few bumps/nodules on my thyroid gland. When I first started the sythroid I was on it for 75mg or mcg. I was told they if my nodules didn't shrink enough before survey I would have to post pone my weightless procedure until that was fixed. Lucky they did shrink for me to have my nov 1st 2012 weightloss surgery. I was still on the 75mg or mcg until my 3month checkup & that's where they lowered it to 50. My next thyroid checkup isn't until October some time. I hope by then I'm lowered to 25. Bc I've been hearing once your on sythroid your on it for a long time

Yes hypo here and on 225mcg of synthroid.. My dr said this surgery more then likely won't change my levels n I will still have to continue the meds lifelong. When I don't take my meds for some time I get a goiter n the thoughts scare me right back into my meds loll :)

Yes I am also still on mine. I had asked the Dr about that and I was told I will have to be on them the rest of my life because the weight loss has nothing to do with Thyroid like it does with other medical issues.... So I guess I am stuck but at least it is a tiny pill....

I've been on thyroid meds for 30 years, my mother was on them for a similar period before dying from an unrelated issue (although she'd also had thyroid cancer) and my grandmother for something like 60 years before dying of old age at 101. There are lots of things that cause thyroid meds to need to be changed but thyroids have a habit of simply "turning up their toes" progressively, so more of a "top up" is required. It's just the way it goes, so get monitored regularly to ensure adjustments are made in a timely manner. Good luck.

Me too. I've been at Syntharoid 150mcg for years. My sleeve doc told me to keep taking my meds. I'm assuming that's being checked with my yearly physical, but I'll ask next time.

Thanks for mentioning it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
