Any Last Minute Words of Wisdom?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am on day 12 of my 14 day pre-op diet. My surgery is this Thursday at 1pm. (June 27th)

Just wondering...For those who have already had the surgery, do you have any last minute words of wisdom? Is there anything that you wish you would have known before going into surgery that no one told you???? I am very excited but a little nervous...

Any advice is appreciated!! :D

I had the sleeve, hiatal hernia and umbilical hernia repair:

For the ride home get BIG undies, mine were ridiculously tight because of swelling. :(

Loose dress, a top and shorts were very hard for me.

On the way home - get Sonic ice......

GasX STRIPS - life saver!

I slept for days after I got home...Good luck!

Tell me if I'm wrong later, but I think your chief regret will be not having been sleeved sooner. Best of the best to you and welcome to your new life. :D

Yes I agree with Cheer Mama, the GasX strips were a lifesaver. I also had some biotene dry mouth spray for when you come out of surgery and cannot drink yet but you need your mouth to have a little more moisture.

Get up and walk walk walk! This and the GasX strips will help with the gas pain.

Not sure if you are married or if you live with someone but have things prepared for when you return home with whatever your NUT and surgeon have told you to eat/drink after surgery. You dont want to have to go to the grocery store on your way home.

Be patient with yourself! It will take time to lose the weight, you will have stalls but you WILL lose the weight! Set goals for yourself along the way, not just the final goal. Some examples are: 1st 5 pounds, BMI goals, Clothing sizes etc.

If you are an emotional or boredom eater, be prepared to have other things to do in place of eating. Have someone to talk to, go for a walk, take a bath, exercise, but be prepared to have to deal with this.

Also, it was good for me (and my family) to clean out all the foods that got me in the position I was in. All the fast and easy foods like crackers, Cookies etc. If they aren't around, they cant be a temptation because they very well can be.

You can do this! Keep coming back to the Forum and get/give support. Let us know how it goes!

Thank you so much! That is great advice. Today, I finished my food shopping and I am going to clean out my cabinets and refrigerator before Thursday! I also have a good support system of friends and family so I will keep busy chatting with them. I have even recruited a few to come "walk" me!! :D Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
