The Fat Whoosh Theory

Recommended Posts

I had been researching why you can stall and then suddenly lose a bunch of weight in a matter of a day, and I encountered a lot of talk of the "Whoosh Effect." Here is an interesting article about it:

It makes sense! What do you think?

An interesting article that has touches of science to it. I have a science background and would like to see much more detail and references to back it up. But as you say, it at least starts to put the stall/drop sequences into some more clear light.

I had this happen just recently in fact. I've been stalled for a few months now (with only 2-3 lbs lost over a given month). During that month I would climb upwards, sometimes as much as 7-8 lbs in a week. Then suddenly, with no real change to my diet and an INCREASE in my exercise, I suddenly dropped nearly 9 lbs in 3 days. And I was peeing A LOT during those 3 days!

I attributed some of the gain to waste build-up (I have one bowel movement approx. 4-5 days), but also Water retention.

Hormones, stress levels, TOM, humidity.....they were all factors for me I'm sure!

I had this happen at 3 weeks. I went up a pound, then all at once lost 7. I figure there has to be some explanation for it. This makes the most sense of theories I've read so far!

Hmmmm interesting. Sounds very plausible. Side note- i seriously doubt i'll ever be a person with "very lean body mass" with fat marbles under her skin! LOL! More like tennis balls. Thanks for posting this!

Very interesting....makes sense.... I always explain the stalls as your bodies way of playing catch up to all the wgt loss. Lose a bunch stall lose a bunch stall. And so on. This is a Lil more scientific than my explanation...lol. Easy to understand. I copied it and put it in my notebook and will bring it up at my next support group meeting....thank you for the info!!!!

This is the rationale my doctor explains to his patients. It makes sense to me, especially when looking at my progress chart. Flat, spike, massive drop every time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
