54 and beginning a new chapter!

Recommended Posts

Hi all....I am a newbie!!! 54, and I live in St. Louis. I started my journey in March......received conditional approval from my insurance co. I have completed the 3 months of a monitored weight loss program from my primary care dr. I have had my psych evaluation, (passed with flying colors!), met with the nutritionist, and met with my surgeon who will perform the sleeve surgery. July 3rd I am scheduled for a scope of my stomach to be done, a pulmonary function test, a Doppler test of discoloration on my legs from diabetes, and some blood work. Doctors office told me after all the results ate in, they submit everything back to the insurance company for final approval. I was told this usually takes about 2 weeks. They told me once they receive the approval I will be scheduled 2 weeks out. So I am hoping for a late July or early August surgery. I am extremely excited!! A little nervous....not really sure why?? I just can't wait to start feeling healthier, and be able to climb a flight of stairs without being out of breath. I just stumbled upon this site while looking up bariatric vitamins.....so glad I found this! I look forward to sharing not only my journey, but all yours as well. Good luck to everyone. Any tips or pointers are welcomed!

I am just a year older than you and had the op april 8... I am down 42 lbs.... its the best thing that I have ever done for myself.... :) no more Mrs. Doubtfire trying to fit into my clothes... lol... (I say that because in this pic, I felt like mrs. doubtfire... my son's wedding .. .I had more girdles on to try to fit into something decent... very uncomfortable day)

I am not where I want to be yet but at least now I have hope that I can reach my goal.... :) and maintain it... my yo-yo diets throughout my life have made my metabolism sluggish... so seeing the numbers go down, make me smile... I smile alot more now... I wonder why?

Hi Pat! Welcome.

Read up and be as prepared as you can be. You'll find pretty much every topic covered here. Ask what you need, vent when you need and know you're not alone through any of it.

Welcome!!!! Am 53, soon to be 54 next month. Also live in STL. Was sleeved 3/25. Down 55 pounds!

Who was your surgeon in STL? I am going to Dr, Stephen Scott at My New Life at Des Peres Hospital. I had heard a lot of good things about him? It is a bit of a drive as I actually live in St. Peter's. not complaining though....I was very, very happy with everyone I have encountered so far.

Thanks for the advice! I have been reading so much, but now that I have found this site, it is nice to have it all at your finger tips as oppose to searching the Internet. You have done really well....keep up the good work!

I had my surgery at SSM DePaul with Dr. Moralis. I am an SSM employee so that guided my choice. I've heard good things about Dr. Scott too. You will be happy with your choice to move forward with this surgery...in addition this board has been a great source of support!

I am hoping I can do my support group at DePaul. It is a lot closer for me since I live in St. Peter's. Thanks for the info.

Hi Pat - I also live in St. Peters and had my surgery with Dr. Scott on 5/31/2013. He has been fantastic and I've had no issues. I think he is one of the best in the STL area. Best wishes to you and if you decide to do the support groups at Des Peres, I should be there.

Hi,

I just did the Pulmonary Function Test. Was that all that was required or did you also have to take Chest X-Rays, Cat Scan, etc.

All I was told was to go see the Pulmonologist & get clearance but what entails a good scored clearance?

What a wonderful life...

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
