How to handle dehydration

Recommended Posts

I simply can't get enough fluids in. And not that it's summer, I'm outside all the time. Drains me even more. My surgeon sent me to the ER for fluids but I was there 2 hours and there were still 15 people ahead of me. I left... How can I get caught up enough on my own. Or, should I go back to the ER? Help please...

You need to go back to the ER immediately. Listen to your doctor! Dehydration can be extremely serious, and can even cause death. If your doctor thought you could get fluids in on your own, he would have told you how to do that.

Is there another hospital or a 24 hour urgent care where you can go?

Once you are dehydrated, it can be hard to rehydrate on Water alone is what I’ve always been told. I have chronic Migraines and once I start throwing up, I can’t stop and get dehydrated and end up at urgent care or the er every time with dehydration. You very likely need iv fluids. Drink gatorade or something with electrolytes while you wait.

I agree with the others. Wait for the IV in the ER, get rehydrated and when you get back home drink 1-2 cups of regular sodium chicken broth every day. You need more sodium so you can hold onto liquid better. Worked for me. Feel better soon!

Please Please go back. I waited and it was a mistake. By the time I want back, it was soooo bad that they had trouble finding my veins. 9 sticks later and a neonate specialist with tiny needles later..... I received 2 (1,000 ml) bags of fluids, 2 bags potassium And, a CT due to the pain that started. ( possible kidney issue) It was awful.

Please go get checked out.

I was having gallbladder issues 3 weeks out and couldn't eat/drink without getting sick. I didn't even think I was that dehydrated, but at the ER they had trouble finding a vein AND my pancreas was inflammed from it. Don't mess with dehydration. You really can't catch up once you are at that point. You need IV fluids.
