Funeral for a friend

Recommended Posts

A couple of weeks ago, I started eating better. At the advice of my NUT, I started drinking at least 64 oz. Water every day, upped my Protein, decreased the carbs, and.....well....I had to give up caffeine and carbonated drinks also.

I have lost a little bit of weight and in general I feel much better because I'm eating better, but DAMN, I hate giving up my caffeine. I am a die-hard Dunkin' Donuts gal. When I first started out, I gave up the Diet Pepsi, DD iced coffees, and reduced my morning coffee from 2 cups to one.

Today is the end of the Caffeine Trail for me. I am sipping what will be my last DD coffee for a long time. Tomorrow I will begin having ZERO caffeine! During this process, I was lucky not to experience the caffeine withdrawal headaches, but I really do HATE giving up that one last coffee....you know....the morning one that gets you going. I am looking at it in a positive way though, as if it's just the next step in my journey. One more step towards better health and wellness.

But for now, I am just sipping and relishing this one last cup of joe. :)

I know the feeling... For me it was hard to give up my Diet Dr Pepper. I just loved the stuff would drink them for Breakfast even... About a six pack a day on average. Believe it or not I do not miss them at all. I never in a million years thought I would say that. After surgery everything changes ( or should I say for many of us). I was also a FF queen.... Loved them dipped in ranch dressing... Anything fried was my friend. Today I have NO desire for fried foods at all. I hope you are able to have the same experience post op! Best Wishes

I gave up coffee at the beginning of my preop diet and it was HELL - for about two days. After that I felt fine. I think this is true for most people - you will live with a couple of days of feeling absolutely miserable: headaches, fatigue, fuzzy brain, but after that, things get better very quickly.

Surprisingly, I was OK with giving up the soda and the rest of the caffeine was OK too. It's just that one last coffee!

I'm hoping that a lot of what I like now will be unappealing to me post op.

Thanks for the good wishes!

I gave up regular coffee a couple of months ago. My husband & I had always bought a pound of ground Dunkin Donuts coffee to enjoy at home. Now I buy the Decaf Dunkin's coffee and have grown to like that as well as regular coffee. Every once in a while I treat my self to a non-fat decaf latte either at Dunkin's or Starbucks. It's a guiltless pleasure!

I feel your pain Corvette! I'm still having that one cup in the morning but I know soon enough, that will be taken away from me too. I'm not going without kicking & screaming too! I love DD as well as Gevalia. But maybe one day down the road, we'll be reunited again & it will be a heavenly experience (maybe?) LOL! I just hope I won't be too hard to live with, like I was when I gave up smoking many years ago.

Good luck to you! Please keep us informed of your journey!

Congrats on quitting smoking! I'm approaching my 2 year quit date which is in August. It's a very liberating feeling not being a slave to nicotine anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
