Constipation?????

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I had got banded one week ago today and have not had a bowel movement at all. I realize that there is no substance going in, and I am taking Fiber. Any suggestions? Sorry for such a sensitive subject......but I am sure you all have been there, done that. Thanks for any help.

Mix some benfiber into your liquids. Or try some pear or prune juice if you want to try something more natural. Both of these options helped me and it was such a releif after they worked lol!

No worries, glad to help :)

I was given a heads up by my nutritionist that it might be an issue, so it was about 3 days before I decided I needed to take some action.

Even now, my bowel movements are a lot less (even though I am eating a lot more veggies than I was before), so if I go a couple of days with out any action, I have some benefiber and its all sorted with in a couple of hours....

My doctor had me take Senekot (a gentle laxative) because I couldn't take it anymore. It took 8 hrs to work and I never had a problem since. I find that Benefiber and Fiber supplements make me more constipated and gives me gas because you must make sure you drink PLENTY PLENTY PLENTY of Water or else it just binds you up.

I was also banded a week ago and am experiencing the same thing. I took some glycolax which is a prescribed laxative...waiting on it to work...good luck

Water, water, water and exercise helped me...I also took a little fiber granules which softened it some for it to come down. However, it still hurt like hell passing it though! (sorry for the unwanted visions)

I had my surgery on a Monday and I had my first BM on Friday... it was my darkest day!

I've met some pre-Banders while waiting for my fill at the dr's office and one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give them is DRINK DRINK DRINK your Water after the surgery. Prune juice, apple cider (it was in season for me), will help immensly and I was told I could also take a stool softener.

Good luck... I've never had a problem since that day but I still shudder thinking about it.

Ann,

I know it's not a pretty subject but my doctor also recommended an enema (up to 4 of them in a day). I used the Fleet Mineral Oil enema. Also, I ended up taking mineral oil orally and it definitely helped as it lubes you from the inside. Gross but that's why I can't stress enough Water to the newly banded!

It sucks - I know...

It was 8 days for me before my first movement--and what did it was drinking a slim-fast shake. For some reason, it loosened me right up! You might try that-but you will definately have fewer movements for a while.

I am also worried about problems with Constipation. I have had problems with it for years and every once in a while, I will take Enulose-a prescribed Syrup that put moisture into your colon and help you pass unwanted backups. Will I still be able to take that after surgery?

Thanks,

Judy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
