TMI - explosive diarrhea days after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Sorry, kind of embarrassing but I need to know if this is concerning. I'm on the 4th day post-op, and having terribly liquid diarrhea that is preceded by loud gurgling in my intestines. I feel like I can't go out and walk too long or I might have an accident. Is this normal? ugh, how long will it last?

Do these episodes happen after you drink something? If so, what are you drinking? I assume you are still on Clear Liquids at 4-day post-op

I'm pretty much always drinking something lol. I had a 8oz nectar, went for a short walk, then felt I needed to get home. Also had been sipping on iced tea all morning.

Same for me, for several days the first week. It got better once I started drinking liquids that were thick like smoothies or Soup, and then no problems once I started on pureed food.< /p>

Your cleaning your body out, only clear liquids in will only be liquids out until you start adding things of some substance...just dont stray to far lol

Same thing happened to me. I'm 3 weeks post op and I'm still leaning more towards diarrhea than solid. Hoping it will change as I eat more solids. Just stay hydrated (which it sounds like you are ).

I'm right there with you TakingBackControl. Was sleeved the same day as you, and considering our diet, it's quite typical. Hope your doing good.

I'm 3 weeks out also, same problem here. It has firmed up a little, but no way near normal. My best friend had gastric bypass last year and she explained that it will never be like it was unless you are dehydrated.

I'm 3 days out & having the same issue. I had to do the laxative cleanse the night before surgery, so a little of that may still be in my system, too. I am on clears for 2 weeks & then fulls for 2 more weeks, so I can't even start purees until 5 weeks out. Ugh...I was expecting poop to be somewhat different post-op, just not quite this different! :P

Yep, I'm 12 days post-op and have it. I noticed it's better for me though when I'm not drinking the protien shakes or having any Soup with heavy cream (like cream of Tomato, which of course, is my favorite lol). But, it still happens.

I hope it stops soon :( I'm not on puree until Monday. The doc an NUT wanted me to stay on full liquids for 2 weeks..

ugh. somehow though misery loves company, huh? We're all at the same place.

Otherwise I feel like I'm doing well, only taking pain med at night to help me sleep, still some neck/shoulder gas but feel pretty good.

How are you guys doing otherwise?

Same story here. (Sleeved Jun 3) I'm finding that I have episodes when I try to advance my diet before it's time to do so. (ie: eating a week 3 food when still on a week 2 diet) Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I start week 4 foods on Mon and tried mashed potatoes last night (a few days early) and my body didn't like it. I've told a few of my friends that I've had a "sh*tty day" when I mean that I have had episodes of diarrhea all day (up to 5 times in one day). My doc says Immodium is ok to take (so I'm thinking I might need to buy stock in it!)

Please don't take offense, but I am curious...why have you been trying to advance your diet? I know some plans seem overly conservative, but I have been too "scared" to go outside my NUT's recommendations

Thing to watch for with diarrhea:

Is it getting worse?

Is it super stinky?

If either is true, call the Dr. for advice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
