Hello all. How many of you are required to do 1 week pre op liquids or 2? I am required to do 2 weeks but my friends dr only had her do 1. UGH! I am mostly concerned about making it 2 whole weeks. I can probably do one but 2??? Lord help.

Two weeks. It wasn't that bad- the first week it was a challenge to even drink much less eat anything. The second week I just got sick of the Protein Shakes, but it wasn't hard to not eat. The most important thing is that you need to follow YOUR doctors instructions because everyone is different, and there are different factors that go into the doctors decision as far as when you can move to the next food phase. Your doctor is the one who knows what is best for you, and you need to trust him/her.

I was talking about pre-op. some doctors say one week and others say two. Just wondering why the difference for the same surgery

My doctor determines the pre-op diet based on the BMI. The more you have to lose; the longer the pre-op diet.

For pre-op, I had to do two weeks of low carb to shrink my liver, then two days of Clear Liquids right before surgery. I think the pre-op is the same as the post-op- it varies depending on the doctor and the patient.

It definitely varies!

My surgeon doesn't do a pre-op liquid diet of any kind. When I questioned my NUT about it, she said "their outlook in this Center of Excellence is that the post-op liquid diet is challenging enough; we simply expect you to have liquids-only after dinnertime the night before surgery, and nothing at all to eat or drink past midnight."

That's about as different as can be from a one or two-week pre-op liquid diet! ;)

My doc requires 2wks full liquid totaling 600-800 calories a day, not to exceed 50g net carb.

Wow. My dr is the center of excellence as well and I was told by the nutritionist that he can tell if you have not completed the diet and he has woken the patients up out of surgery UNCOMPLETED and said let's try this again. When you can complete your liquids. Yikes!

Denise! I feel like yours is attainable. I can do that but 14 days of clear liquids??? Heck I might be at my goal weight by then and may not need the surgery. Lol. JK

The information I got was 1 week of liquids pre-op. My plan is to use the HMR shakes. I don't anticipate it being too bad, since 10 years ago I did them for 6 months. Lost 100 pounds, but gained them back. Hopefully the surgery will be the tool to resolve my binge eating disorder and yo-yo dieting. This won't be my first rodeo... I've lost over 100 pounds 3 times with diet and exercise. They say when you lose it, you find it, so this time I'm getting rid of it !!!! My plan is to post my beginning stats the day I start my pre-op liquid diet. My surgery is scheduled for Aug. 1st.

No matter what you have to do for pre-op or post-op, just keep reminding yourself that you CAN do it, and keep focusing on the end result- a healthy, happy you! This is not an easy journey in the beginning- it takes commitment, dedication, and strong will power. But when you are feeling weak, you just need to keep reminding yourself WHY you chose to go this route. For me, I had battled my weight for 20 years and I was so sick of being fat and feeling like an 80 year old, and feeling like my life was passing me by because there were so many things I could not do that I want to do, at my current weight and health. I was willing to do ANYTHING to change my life, which is why I chose surgery. So far, I have been amazed by how quickly I am losing weight, and the food issues, such as liquid diets, are so insignificant to me compared to how good I feel about myself now. You can do this!

I'm on day 4 of clear liquids with 3 shakes a day. It sucks. Lost 2.6lbs. My mistake was not gradually weaning off of caffeine. The first day I had horrible caffeine withdrawal and was barely functional. I've cheated 2 days with a spoonful of Peanut Butter because I'm so damn weak and lightheaded, and I'm a stay at home mom with two young kids (1 and 3.5) so I can't afford to be weak and non functional.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
