Diabetics after the sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow diabetics,

I have been diabetic since 1995. Before surgery I was on heavy insulin and oral meds. Since surgery I take nothing. My sugars are always normal and I'm sooooooo happy about that. My last A1C was 9.0 and I can't wait to see what it's going to be in July.

My problem is I'm so confused on how many carbs to eat now. It has been drilled in my head to not eat more than 40 carbs a day, but my docs guidelines look like much more. I was never sent to a nutritionist and I realize this handicaps me in this area. I had the low carb diet down to a tee. I lost 100 lbs in 2004 and went off 2005 and gained all my weight back. I haven't been able to lose low carb ever since. I heard this can happen because your body learns to hold weight while low carbing. Anyways, who the heck knows anymore. I would just like to hear from people who have lost successfully how many carbs they ate during the weight loss period. I know everyone is different, just wanting some example.

Thank you for listening.

Aw hun, I know how frustrating it can be. I have a T1 Diabetic daughter and we had to watch her carbs and now watch mine as well since I was sleeved. My Dr said to stay around 50 total carbs, Of course this is difficult to do when you know little things like green Beans, or oranges have carbs too.

It is frustrating because I'm still supposed to have 1-2 shakes a day and those carbs add up fast. I'm losing 2 lbs a week and building muscle. My sugars are still awesome so I guess I'm doing the right things. I just don't ever want my diabetes to come back. What a horrible life that was.

i"m sorry to hear about your daughter. I'm sure that is so hard to deal with for life. I guess I should count my blessings.

Don't be sorry! We are all used to counting for her and she knows how to do it herself too. :)

For shakes I have Syntrax Nectar in chocolate truffle, vanilla bean, and strawberry mousse. They have 0 carbs, and 0 fat. The chocolate and vanilla are pretty good in Water, but I prefer all of my shakes in milk which I know adds up my carbs. You could try changing up your shakes.

Your A1C was 9.0? Hmm...my doc has a fit if mine is anything over 6.0? I'm confused? He has me on Glumetza 500 mg a day & since I've been testing at anywhere between 5.5 to 6.0, he said he would take me off my meds if I lost at least 20-25 lbs. That was last year sometime...in the meantime, my A1C is still in the high 5's or right at 6.0 & now I've decided to have the sleeve. I'm actually confused as to what Protein Drinks will do to me if the carb counts are high? Thank you for bringing this up as I will need to ask my doctor about all this!

I too was taking Glumetza 500mg a day with an A1C 5.5-6.5 prior to surgery. While in the hospital overnight after surgery, they tested my blood sugar...and it registered normal EVERY time. I had not taken any meds that day and I reported the normal readings to my PCP 5 days later. I told him that I had not taken any Glumetza post-op during those 5 days and he took me off of it entirely. He did leave me on meds for high blood pressure, but I think that will be the next med to go.

Kulita-I didn't realize they made Protein Shakes with zero carbs. I'm definitely going to switch when I run out of mine. I've been hearing great things about Syn. nectar anyways. Thank you

Personally, I didn't care too much for the "juice" flavors like Twisted cherry or Roadside Lemonade. However, there are a lot on here who really do like those flavors. Look out for the sample packets before you invest in a tub that you may hate. Almost everyone loves the chocolate Truffle one. The vanilla bean one I got to mix with some slices of canned peaches, or some canned pineapple when I make it with Silk's coconut milk, or some no sugar strawberry preserves.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
