Calorie count for post-surgery

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

What is the proper calorie range for gastric sleeve patients? I am almost a year out and I've been doing 1,000 calories. Is this too much?

Everyone is different. There is no set "range". It is going to depend on your current weight, your goal weight and the amount of activity you get in a day. Your nutritionist would be the best resource for this. I do know that discussing it with my stalker nutritionist yesterday she mentioned 1200 kcals for women after a year and 1400-1500 for men, if they had already lost most of the weight that they wanted and were not sedentary.

My Dr & Nut has me on 600 a day until week 6 and then it is bumped up to 800. Honestly, for me I was finding it difficult to stay at 600 and would often creep into the 800 range. Now, that I am past 6 weeks I creep into the 1,000's regularly. I still loose weight and I eat whatever I want, albeit bread or bread like products have not been doing too well so I try to avoid that.

I am 4 weeks out and am in the 800-1000 range. I definitely have a larger capacity than I thought I would and it makes me very nervous! I can actually drink a 12 oz Protein Shake in one shot and now with food, I can eat a small wheat pita round (50 calories made with flax seed) stuffed with 5oz of tuna a slice of Tomato and 6 spinach leaves. That's only 200 calories but the portion seems big compared to what others tolerate...although significantly less than what I used to eat!

What?!?!? How is that possible? From reading it on these boards I know it is possible, but it doesn't make any sense. I mean if I make a 6 oz shake with milk for Breakfast, that alone comes to over 200 cals.

My Nut devised a plan for me to consume 600 cals by having 6 oz of shake and about 400 split between BF, lunch, and dinner

Breakfast

Shake-2 oz of shake

lunch

Shake- 2 oz of shake

Dinner

Shake- 2 oz of shake

I am with Reigo in what I can eat. 300 a day seems really low and almost on the brink of malnutrition... but that is just my opinion. and you should always follow your Dr's guidelines.

Jhiggy, are you eating it over the span of 30-45 minutes and chewing thoroughly? If you chew until it is pulverized you can meet your caloric intake and it will not hurt/give that lump in the chest feeling as often.

At about six months out, I was at about 900 calories and now at almost 11 months out, I shoot for about 1100 calories. My Protein goal has almost always been at least 80 grams a day. I don't track specifically carbs or fat, but MyFitnessPal does count that - but I don't have any set goals for those.

I also work at getting 5000 steps. :)

For breakfast I typically have a half a cup of 2% cottage cheese with a little natural pineapple juice on it and half a banana. For lunch I have Soup or fish with a veggie. For dinner I have fish with a veggie or ricotta bake (recipe on here) with a veggie. So far, my veggie of choice has been oven roasted brussell sprouts tossed in olive oil with a little Kosher salt. I roast them until they are fairly mushy. For Snacks I have Greek yogurt, cheese and/or a fudgesicle. I also drink 2-3 cups of tea in addition to 40-60 oz of Water. I should mention that I refuse to consume artificial sweeteners (my opinion is that they are far worse for you than real sugar but I respect others may disagree) so my yogurt, fudgesicle, etc are higher calorie. I try to keep my carbs under 60 grams. I'm 3 weeks post op and have lost 29 lbs.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
