SimplyFAB 83 Posted June 21, 2013 How slow does everyone eat? By the time I get to my second bite my food is already cold!

SimplyFAB 83 Posted June 21, 2013 It takes me upto 15 minutes to eat a meal and 8 minutes for a piece of toast. I wonder why I get sick if I don't eat extremely slow? I also need to take extremely small bites. It can get annoying.
zenandnow 514 Posted June 21, 2013 You have to eat very small bites, and it helps to put the fork down & sit back for a few minutes between bites. I literally push back from my plate. It's a completely different pace than I'm used to. I try to use the time to talk to whomever I'm with, or if I'm alone I read or do something in between. I have to retrain myself to slow down and listen to my body. I've had a few instances where I eat too fast & it just makes me sick. Not worth it. My food does get cold, but I'm getting used to it. I try to choose foods that are ok hot or cold!
SpaceDust 585 Posted June 21, 2013 If it really bothers you, there are some ways you can keep your food warm longer, though I'm afraid none of these would work when eating out . First, it helps if you warm your plates before serving your meal - you'd probably have your best luck with stoneware type plates for this. You can put them in the oven on low or use one of those heating pads that are meant for pre-heating dishes. You could also think about setting a heating pad under your plate at the table. Second, there are some dishes that are specifically designed for slow eaters, and there are pediatric sized ones that might be appropriate for us, as well as larger ones. They work by having a chamber underneath the dish that you fill with warm Water at the start of the meal.
TES 858 Posted June 21, 2013 You could use a coffee mug warmer or heat up in the microwave too.

TES 858 Posted June 21, 2013 PS--I'm 4.5 months out now and feel like I eat at a normal-slow pace--similar to other with whom I eat if they aren't fast eaters. I don't eat as slowly as I did early post-op, but more slowly than I did pre-op (and I wasn't a particularly fast eater then, unless I was super-hungry and would usually catch myself). It's my new normal--you start to think that the pace at which you eat and the amount you eat are what you've always done, which is great. It doesn't seem strange anymore...it seems like what everyone should do.
tiredsushi 12 Posted June 22, 2013 Always eat slow until you learn your limit, then you can eat quicker you just have to visually be able to recognize when you need to stop at that point and know how different foods feel, some things will make you much more full than others, and yes, lots of the time it ends up cold.
