First time going out for dinner

Recommended Posts

I agree what what they have all said!

I just want to add that you should not be too adventurous in what ever it is you decide to try....you don't want to have a "situation" while out in public! Go very, very slow and chew well.

:) congrats to your son!

I think a good rule of thumb is try the food that you might eat out at home first. Even when I first tried refried Beans, we got them carryout first before I tried them in a restaurant. I don't think that I ate out for the first 2.5 to 3 months post op. I love the suggestions to do a fun activity with your son instead.

I would check and see what your NUT has cleared you for. I was on mushy's at that time period and I could have mashed potatoes, hummus, yogurts, Soups.

You still need to be very careful, your tummy is still healing. Maybe you could take something with you to eat while he is eating.

Congrats!!! They grow up too quickly! So glad that you are getting healthier so you can enjoy life better with him!

I went to Big Boy yesterday, first time out for dinner. I had broccoli with ham Soup. Looked it up on Fitness Pal sitting right at the table! I chewed it very well and also didn't finish it. Just wished I had asked for the lemon Water in a "to go" cup :)

Shocked so many are eating potatoes only a few weeks after surgery.

A shrimp cocktail should be just enough!

Enjoy!

If you go to a Mexican food restaurant, tortilla Soup, skip the tortillas. At three weeks I was flying home and was at a loss at the airport, I settled on Wendy's chili, I could have ground beef or turkey and Beans were ok. Of course, I could only eat about an eighth of a cup but it was delish. I still get it once in a while. If your son is graduating from pre-school, he'd probably love IHop or The Original pancake House.....all sorts of child friendly dishes and YOU can order a scrambled egg with no butter!!! Enjoy and congrats!

My first time out to eat after the surgery, I stayed on the safe side and just had iced tea. Here are some other things I tried in my first few attempts out to eat: egg whites with a little cheese, a side order of black Beans and some cheese melted on them, and fish. I am pretty lucky to live in a place where almost every restaurant serves fish in some un-fried form, so this is always my "go to" restaurant order. Do NOT be afraid to ask for what you want in terms of special preparation - most restaurants are very accommodating. We have a local Mexican restaurant that makes a killer veggie black bean chili - very healthy and high Protein. I also recently discovered that Chili's has a great "Light" Mango Chili Tilapia. It comes with rice and steamed broccoli. Ask them to double the broc and leave off the rice. I ate my tiny portion and took home the rest - worked out well for 4 meals!!! And if possible, ALWAYS look at the menu online BEFORE going to the restaurant. Make a gameplan and stick to it. You can even call ahead and ask questions about the menu or what they can do to modify dishes for you. Fail to plan, plan to fail.

So went out for dinner with the family, my son chose Red Robin. I had Water with lemon, a bite of my hubby's cheese stick, 1 fry, and 2 bites of my moms whiskey chicken wrap ( yum)...... i was done! Definitely realize that the food I once enjoyed but was so bad fir me.... Is bad for me!! It causes pain, yucky feeling and just blah. Lesson learned....

Potatoes are fine, I think those that react to the potato thing are those on a strict anti carb diet. Potatoes are a whole food with a lot of goodness, they are easy to digest early after surgery and should cause no issues at all.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
