Seriously? Does everyone exercise?

Recommended Posts

I am really struggling with this! I am about 5.5 months post op. The first three months I worked out a lot, hated every second of it, but I did it. Here I am a month and a half later really struggling to continue working out. I didn't for a long time, and this week I did 40 minutes 4 days a week on the arc trainer. I got done today and seriously asked myself if this is something I can see myself doing long term realistically. The answer is no. If I can make myself continue to do it, it will be til I get to goal weight and then I will just rely on nutrition. Since I really don't plan on working out consistently forever, should I just stop now and take the slow weight loss instead of getting to goal by working my rear end off and then stopping? I'm just babbling. Is anyone losing weight without working out?

Maybe you could find something to do that you would enjoy. Even if it's not gym stuff, you could enjoy so many other things that would get you moving. I wish I had access to a swimming pool cause I love the Water. At the moment I have really stated to enjoy walking. It is very therapeutic to me. Everyone is different and find their own place in the exercise world. I think the biggest part of this weight loss journey is to get moving, whether it's skiing, bowling, walking, elliptical, etc.. What do you enjoy that doesn't involve sitting?

That's one of my biggest fears is that even after I've lost weight, I'm still going to HATE exercise!

The first six months after surgery, the only exercise I did was walking. Then I started yoga (bikram and hot mukti). Then I started at the gym. Cardio at first, then strength and now I do a lot of group fitness classes. And I still do the yoga three times a week.

I love it. I have found the trick for me is to do most of what I enjoy and a little of what I don't. I hate the elliptical so I give that about 15 minutes and then move on to the treadmill which I love, for example. I love yoga so that is a given and I am really enjoying the group fitness classes. I wear a heart monitor watch thingy to track the calories I am burning and I find that to be a real motivational tool. A Les Mills Body Combat class can burn 600 calories. Knowing that at the end of the class feels so good on top of the adrenalin high that is normal post a workout.

Edited to add - I enjoy it all a lot more now that I am no longer obese. Size does matter when you're jumping about. It is much, much more enjoyable and things like running on the treadmill are now achievable for me without doing damage and that in itself has increased the enjoyment factor.

I have not had surgery yet, my date is July 13th... I am excited about getting to a point to where I can exercise!! Maybe it's all in my head but I sure hope not! I have several pictures posted on places like the fridge and cabinet and even my make up mirror of what I want to aim toward as my goal, not to look like these people but to get as close as I can to a fit me! I have a lot to loose too so it's gonna be a long hard road but I feel like I'm ready! I have several different pieces of exercise equipment and I'm planning to purchase more but so far I have a gazelle, total gym, elliptical, and loose weights.. I'm wanting a treadmill, bicycle, and most of all a bow flex revolution!! Maybe I'm going batty but I'm excited about this! Maybe trying different things or even try some of the dance video workouts they look fun, I plan to get some of those too! I hope this isn't just all in my head, and honestly I don't think it is because even at the point I'm at now I've been doing a little more each week so I think I'm just to the point it's all or nothing! Good luck and I hope you find something you enjoy!!

I have lost 144 pounds in 9.5 months with no exercise! I know I should start but damn I hate it. I really am going to start using my elliptical! Really I am! It's going to happen!

I'm six weeks post op and don't exercise. My food intake is so low my doc told me not to. I do really need to do something as my thighs look like bags of cottage cheese. I really use to love working out years ago but after and accident I can't seem to get back into a groove.

I try to do it first thing in the morning before work. If I waited until after work, I would be able to talk myself out of it. I didn't exercise the first 6 months and now I really wished I would have. I hate exercise and I don't like going to the gym (at all), but I feel so good after I'm done and I've reached my exercise goal for the day. I don't see myself ever "liking it", more of tolerating it.

Haha! I actually enjoy exercising but if there is a time where I am unable to do it on a consistent basis for a few days, I find it sooo hard to get back into it. I do know that I am losing weight no matter if I am exercising or not, but I am definitely toning up and looking better when I am exercising AND it really is better for your health to exercise.

I think you should find something different to do, maybe switch it up a little. Do a video, go to a Zumba class, grab a friend and go walking. Find something you like to do that isn't something that you will begrudge doing.

Take care and just keep moving but find something you enjoy doing!

Exercise doesn't have to be miserable and in a gym. I enjoy riding bikes with my husband, going for brisk walks, c25k. When my ankles get smaller I'm hoping to get back into in line skating as well. LOVE that. If I work out outside, I do it at 5:30 am or 8:30 pm when it's cool and the world is quieter. <3 what if you add an exercise buddy?

I f**king hate exercising! And I get pissed when I read people that never exercise losing tremendous amounts of weight! (Sorry) :P

That being said... I exercise. I am doing this to hopefully become a healthier person. And movement is part of that. At the moment I walk and am doing C25K and I feel better after doing it.

"Butterthebean" called someone the other day a "skinny fat person"

And I think that's very fitting. I'm sure we've all known someone like that, skinny but out of shape?

What specifically do you hate about it? That may help you see what exactly gives you the negative outlook towards exercise and maybe there's a way to get around what you hate, find something you like and thus be more motivated. Is it a public thing and you don't like being around other people while you do it? Is it because maybe you don't have much time due to a busy schedule and stress about finding time for it? Is it the actual physical exertion involved and you don't like or the sweating often involved? Is a combination of some of these or something entirely different? If you can, let us know what specifically you don't like about it and maybe there's something you can do to still get exercise in and not hate it.

Lol I heard the term skinny fat back when I was watching weeds. Haha

Laura, is there any exercise you could see yourself liking? Biking w hubby? Walks in natur?e (remember the hike!) early am walks with or without music, outside?

I totally look foreword to my walks and runs that I do ALL BY MUSELF. It's meditation for me. I get cranky if I don't get my time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
