So I'm doing low carb high Protein like most folks on here. My question is when you are doing low carb do you count total carbs or net carbs? I know that when you count the Fiber the net carbs are lower. Before surgery I was a big fiber eater but now I don't get many carbs therefore not much in the form of fiber. I try to make sure that if I am getting carbs that they have some fiber in them as well. I don't eat bread or Pasta. I have found that carb balance whole wheat tortillias are pretty good (13 carbs, 10 gm fiber = 3 net carbs). Most of my carbs come from those tortillias (I don't eat more than one a day) and fruits (minimal) and veggies. Just wondering how the vets do it :)

Count total carbs.

When your body is trying to make energy all carbs turn into glucose no matter where they come from. The only thing that doesn't get converted as readily is insoluble fiber which sweeps through the intestines. Insoluble fiber may be difficult to digest after a VS so be careful.

I forgot to add that most products will have insoluble fiber on the nutrition label below the Total Carb line. It is usually indented. My daughters Diabetic Dietitian taught me that :)

Net carbs are a hold over from the Atkins craze. Count the whole thing.

I've read of people on here using tortilla shells instead of bread. Sparingly of course. I saw one person make a pizza out of one. Put sauce on it and then healthy toppings and baked it for a few minutes. I wouldn't throw them out but maybe use them less.

I don't have my surgery binder (a.k.a. "sleeve Bible") with me atm...can one of the vets remind me how many total carbs we should limit ourselves to in a day? I know how many grams of Protein and how many ounces of Water, but I need to memorize the carb total, since carbs have always been my Achilles heel!

I usually don't eat breads, Pasta, rice, or starchy vegetables....I keep my diet Protein, veggies (some carbs), and some healthy fats like avocados. I do drink Premier Protein shakes and Quest Protein Bars. But I really like to keep my diet simple..... :)

You want to keep your carbs to a minimum aim for no more than 50 per day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
