But it's not a pouch' date=' it's a smaller version of your own stomach when you have VSG. Sounds like a recommendation your surgeon makes to GB patients that may be getting extrapolated for VSG patients?[/quote']

Sorry. I used the word pouch because I am post lap band removal and I just use that terminology interchangeably. No. He definitely said no pop due to the possibility of permanently stretching the stomach.

I am 18 months out and I haven't had a coke, soda or pop since about 2 months pre-op. I was so surprised that I haven't missed it. The only time I even think about a diet coke is when hubby and I go to the movies. popcorn and diet coke just kinda go together. I have heard so many bad things about them being painful and all around bad for you that I don't even want to try. #1. I am not into pain. #2. I don't want to go against my docs orders. and #3 I want to follow the rules since VSG is such a big step to change my life for the better.

My sweet tooth has never gone away...that's been my big downfall and has contributed to my 4 month stall. I just have to say no.

I soooo identify with this post. I was never a 'coke' girl, I only had one occasionally, maybe a "SIX PACK" per year....except it had to be a fountain coke over crushed ice. LOL Just like you said, the only time I ever think about wanting one is when I walk in the theatre and smell the popcorn!!! My husband doesn't eat either now, due to changes he made after getting a stent in one of his arteries......but still, the smell. I have never gotten either, and once I walk through the lobby and get in the theater and seated, I'm fine! You can't smell it in there like you do in the lobby where I am SURE they are pumping out popcorn smell!!! LOL

I am almost 8mos post-op (oct 30.2012) and I have had a occasional soda with no problems. My doctor is on the side of "Stomach will not stretch". The only thing I still can not drink is coffee. The only time I have coffee is when it is in a Protein frappuccino!

VSG removes the stretchy part of your stomach. It is unlikely and potentially impossible to stretch your sleeve. However, you can defeat the sleeve by grazing "slider" type foods every hour or two. That might be why there is a misperception that the sleeve can be stretched.

I agree why go so far and take this big step in having surgery done and start eating sweets and drinking sodas that defeat the purpose

I believe the assumption is that it's diet pop?

Me and my hubby have been working on the change off of soda for 2 weeks now. I dropped soda like a rock and he's still struggling. :( Granted, he's working 12 hour days right now, so all the changes we're required to do have been harder for him. He can't find an alternative to soda yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
