I go for my 3 month post op appointment this Friday and I will be asking about drinking POP :) I tried a sip of diet coke about a month ago and wasn't impressed with the taste. A couple of weeks ago I tried diet 7 up, and liked it. This week I tried diet A&W diet root beer and liked it. But, I don't want to drink POP if it will harm my sleeve, so I will talk to my doc and NUT.

I was ADDICTED to diet soda. I know that like any addict if I were to take a sip, next time it would be two sips and then pretty soon I would be up to a couple cans a day. I would let it replace the heathy Water I drink. I made a choice to have 85% of my stomach removed so that I can live a healthier life and be there for my son and hopefully future grandkids. Making a decision to start drinking diet soda is not a healthy choice for me. There are studies that show that diet sodas are just as detrimental to insulin regulation as sugar.

Hello I have not had my surgery yet' date=' but I was told not to drink soda because it stretches your stomach[/quote']

There is a school of thought by some doctors that yes, the carbonation can stretch your stomach. But there are also doctors that believe this is not true and moderation is key...

Myself? I don't drink SODA anymore it's not something I wish to put in my body anymore.

Not saying that I don't eat crap occasionally...

(Can anyone say 1/2 slice of pizza last night)

Soda was something I used to drink everyday!

It was part of my weekly shopping list. I was addicted to it! I feel good not drinking it anymore.

But that's just me :)

I am 18 months out and I haven't had a coke, soda or pop since about 2 months pre-op. I was so surprised that I haven't missed it. The only time I even think about a diet coke is when hubby and I go to the movies. popcorn and diet coke just kinda go together. I have heard so many bad things about them being painful and all around bad for you that I don't even want to try. #1. I am not into pain. #2. I don't want to go against my docs orders. and #3 I want to follow the rules since VSG is such a big step to change my life for the better.

My sweet tooth has never gone away...that's been my big downfall and has contributed to my 4 month stall. I just have to say no.

" I'm depriving myself of good health by drinking it"

EXACTLY! Soda pop has nothing good about it.. Other than its taste it's a waste!

I agree why go so far and take this big step in having surgery done and start eating sweets and drinking sodas that defeat the purpose

I just got my surgery date and I formation packet yesterday. Carbonated beverages was listed under the "will stretch your sleeve" category along with eating past the point of being full.

I was told no soda/pop at all. According to my doc it can stretch the pouch, and the carbonation can cause gas pain.

But it's not a pouch, it's a smaller version of your own stomach when you have VSG. Sounds like a recommendation your surgeon makes to GB patients that may be getting extrapolated for VSG patients?

My surgeon allows carbonated beverages (calorie-free/super low calorie ones of course) 3 months post-op. I used to drink several diet Cokes a day and now I will on occasion drink a Le Croix flavored carbonated Water or Pellegrino or a diet ginger ale. I've had a diet Coke once or twice. I do this once every week or two and it's a nice refreshing change. I feel like those people who say they only drink pop as a special treat. I could easily go without it now (where I found that difficult in the past) and feel that I use it wisely. I would never drink a sugar carbonated drink--my surgeon's rule is no more than 15 calories per 8 ounces for any beverage. I sip it slowly and haven't had any issues. I drink water 15 minutes before I eat but I wouldn't do that with a carbonated beverage, since the air fills me up more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
