Now FYI I'm way too early in postop to even consider cheating on my diet. Just curious though, say I wanted to sip some diet coke in the future, is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be? The whole carbonation irritating the stomach deal?

I was a coke zero addict before surgery, I would have one or two 2 litre bottles a day. And I didn't give it up until the day before surgery. But strangely after surgery I don't miss it that much. I have had a sip post op and it made me so uncomfortable, like I could feel every bubble in my stomach. It was kind of painful.

Anyway I'm 5 months out now and I told myself I would try drinking some again at a year out.

I am not even going to try it because it is on my list from my doctor of NEVER, NO, NOT EVER :)

I was sleeved on March 27. I tried a sip of diet soda after a couple of weeks, then at one month. I threw up both times. Now, I can now drink Coke zero without any problems.

I drink sodas all the time since I've been at goal. No issues whatsoever.

I gave up soda simply because it isn't a healthy option. I was a huge diet coke and diet dr pepper drinker, but decided that once I was sleeved, I would make every effort to be as healthy as possible. Don't need it in my world, don't miss it and feel that by ditching it, I am more healthy than if I kept drinking (even if I had a just a sip every so often, like so many on here do). Many on here feel that they are depriving themselves if they give up soda. I'm personally just the opposite, I'm depriving myself of good health by drinking it. So I ditched it. Your mileage may vary though....

Talk to your doctor/nut and ask him/her if soda is allowed or not.. and if not, you can ask why it's not allowed. Personally, I like to know exactly WHY I'm doing something.

As for if I've tried it.. yes I have.. and it felt just the same on my sleeve as it did on my full size stomach. My post-op diet instructions said no soda for six weeks and then after that it said it's fine as long as well tolerated. It's not something I drink every day or even every week... but I enjoy a serving on occasion as a treat.

Someone recommended the soda stream flavors. You just get the flavors and mix with Water and you won't have any carbonation. I'm going to try it. They have diet caffeine free.

I was told no soda/pop at all. According to my doc it can stretch the pouch, and the carbonation can cause gas pain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
