Approved! Now terrified!

Recommended Posts

I was just approved by my gastroenterologist that its perfectly safe (I have Crohn's disease) that I have the sleeve. I'm super excited, but scared to death. I made the mistake of telling a few friends and their answer to me was that I was crazy. Ughh! I'm nervous enough. I don't need unsupportive friends.

I made the same mistake, in telling my very judgmental sisters. My husband and daughters are so supportive, and are backing my decision, which they know is based on my research and speaking to others, and joining groups like this. I went to seminars, met with 3 surgeons, went to a psychologist, a nutritionist, and my general practitioner. What I got from my sisters was "I wouldn't do that if I were you." Of course they are not me, they are all under 130 lbs. They have never been fat, but they call themselves 'fat' in that annoying skinny girl kind of way. I don't listen to them, but it still hurts. You deserve support and love, which is what I told them. I didn't ask for anyone's opinion (except for my husband) so I don't need any unsolicited advice and warnings about how this person gained all their weight back and its a waste of time, you're just gonna get fat again... Some people suck. Just believe in yourself and your decision, and do your best!!!!!!!

I have to say that I have been very lucky in that regard. I did not keep the fact that I was going to have surgery a secret. Just about everyone I told has seen me struggle over the years with weight, and they were all happy for me, but at the same time concerned over having such a major surgery.

I think it is great that we have forums like this so that we can all get the support we need. Like you said, your sisters have never had a weight problem and can't understand where you are coming from or what you are going through. Everyone on this site certainly does!

Good for you for taking charge of your health and doing the research to put your mind at ease. It is scary and exciting all at the same time. Good luck on your journey!

Thanks ladies!! My family is very supportive. Actually, everyone BUT my husband. He says I want the easy way out. That's not the case. He said try hard for 3-4 months, and if I still fail, THEN he will support my choice. He's afraid that I might die or live with complications. I'm 90 pound over weight. I could die at anytime from a heart attack or stroke.

Just so you don't think it's just one for the ladies, I told one of my friends who said I was crazy too and that I look fine and shouldn't do this. My response was "the ball is rolling and I'm just needing support, not criticism." It took a couple of weeks and now my friend is being supportive.

Haha don't listen to anyone that's not supportive only a few things to know

1. Some people just are not in your shoes

2. Sometimes it's just they are worried about you

3. They might even be jealous and cautious over their own body issue.

My Twin when I told her told me should couldn't support me getting gutted like a fish because I was lazy as she said.

I'm now 11 months post op.

She's now 6 months post op.

They don't know what they say or why at the time, you make the decision for you and can own it. If they don't like it screw em.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
