Where did all this hunger come from?

Recommended Posts

I am 6 weeks out today. Down 31lbs. 19lbs since surgery.

But in the last couple of days, I am hungry - alot. I was not hungry before the surgey. Probably due to eating more than I should have. But I thought we were supposed to have less hunger?

This is driving me crazy. Has anyone else had this issue?

We will always have head hunger. Part of the hormone was removed but not all of it. And from my understanding that hormone does come back.plus there are other hormones that make us hungry as well. Thats why its important to make sure you always get Protein in first veggies second and maybe carbs if you have any extra room. The further out you get the solid protein will keep you fuller longer. Are any of you taking a PPI for acid reflux which also mocks hunger?

I am on solids and always have Protien first. Not having much else to be honest. But I will look into the Zantac issue. I am taking that, just stopped taking Nexium. Maybe that has something to do with it

It is one of those things that seems to differ from person to person with no understanding of why. None of know how our bodies will react post surgery. I am one of those that rarely feels hungry anymore however post surgery I developed a lactose intolerance and can not have most Protein powders. The next person may be fine with lactose and Protein powders, but feel hunger. The thing is, we are all different. We can't look to someone else's journey and expect ours to be the same. We will have our own journey.

I am sorry you have the hunger thing to deal with. I imagine it sucks. But stick with it, let your body recover and find the new normal gap for you. Get your protein in and some monounsaturated fatty acids in order to reach satiation and manage the hunger. Failing that, look to make sure it isn't an acid issue. If these approaches dont work, then chances are it is head hunger you are dealing with. If so, then only you can deal with that by manages whatever you got going on in there that makes you think you are hungry.

Good luck.

Yep, I am hungry only when I think about it. When I distract myself, the hunger goes away. But no cheesy scones for me, anyway!!!

I just wanted to say that I am 3 months out, and I'm still hungry every 2-3 hours. It's not head hunger, and it's not acid (I've taken a PPI all along). That said, I've still lost 50 lbs since my surgery.

I was also hoping I would never be hungry, but apparently that doesn't happen for all of us. It sucks that the hunger makes me think about food more often than I would like! But as long as you're focusing on your healthy Proteins, you will still lose weight. I find that meat and/or cheese keep me feeling full longer. (Protein drinks and yogurt, while they have high Protein, seem to digest faster for me, leaving me hungry sooner.)

I think the most important thing is just having healthy Snacks and drinks with you wherever you go, so the hunger doesn't tempt you into eating something you shouldn't!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
