ebhmom1 0 Posted July 28, 2004 Hello to all- My question- WHen I started this process I was gung ho on the lap band. Went to a CORI seminar- Dr Wood was all geeked up on thier version of RNY. So I got exceited sent all my paperwork and all the are waiting for is the letter of recommendation from my PCP and my pysch eval results. I have since reconsiderd and decided Lap Band is the best choice for me. Psych evaluation was today and the psychologists though it was a good choice and told me that he has had 15 paitents do the lap band, but the all use the dr out of port hurin because all he does in lap band and maybe I shoud keep my options open. (He has had several patents do RNY also- so he didn;t have negatives things to say about my surgeon or RNY, just that I had thought the process through and maybe I wanted to keep my eyes open.) I called CORI to see how receptive they were to the LAP-BAND, I mentioned that Dr Wood seemed to not be big on it. My case coordinator lowered her voice and said- "yeah, they do it, they just don't like to." So- Long story short- My question- In your opinions do I have an ehtical need to stay with them- should I go through the consult, or should I just seek the Dr out from port huron and ask that the rest of my info be sent to him? Thanks- :guess
baileymb 0 Posted July 28, 2004 Hi There, I had the band done through Beaumont Troy. The surgeon is female and she was great! I am not the only one who has gone with her here on this board, peek around and I am sure you will read a lot about Dr. Zoe Deol! PM me if you are interested, if you like! Good luck to you! La_madam 20 Posted July 28, 2004 You have no ethical need to stay with anyone. This is about you ans what is best for you and what surgeon you feel most comfortable with plain and simple. This is a life changing event you will be going through and you want the best doctor you can find with the most experience who ever that may be. If Dr Wood is not keen on the lap band "but will do it" then you should defiantely explore more options . Just my opinion Good Luck to you and your decision:)
New Hope 37 Posted July 28, 2004 Please make sure you find out how long any surgeon you're researching has been doing lapbands, do they specialize in laproscopic surgery in general (ex. hiatal hernia, gall bladder, gastric reflux repair, etc.), # of bands they've actually put in, follow up care. Does this dr. have experience in fills, how hard is it to get a fill appt. scheduled (wait time), cost per fill (if covered by ins., your co-pay amt.). See if he/she has a website (gen. info. about surgeon (licensing, # yrs. practicing, etc.), patients testimonials. I'm sure you'll think of other ?? Write them down before you see a dr. Please choose a dr. that you have full confidence in -- confidence for the surgery and for the after-care. Best of luck!
GeezerSue 7 Posted July 28, 2004 You have an ethical responsibility to yourself to seek the best possible care you can find. Period. NEVER, EVER, EVER go to a doctor who, in your opinion, is not the best you can find for your needs. Your responsibility to your doctors is to give them the info they need to understand what your medical needs are, to do as they say or tell them why you are NOT doing what they say (don't do one thing and pretend to do another), and to pay them or fill out the paperwork necessary so that they can get paid. And, a doctor who is not "sold" on the idea of the lap band is a doctor who is not ready to support the patients post-op, and IMHO a very bad choice. Since you asked...
