Recommended Posts

So I went to my first post-op appointment on Monday, after having surgery on June 5th. Well, I was pretty psyched when I found out I had lost 15.2llbs..... BUT today I weighted myself and I gained 2lbs. Has that happened to anybody else??? I am freaking out a little..... UGRRRRR

Yes, it happens to me about every 2 weeks. I think it is dependent on how many carbs I consume. The body stores more Water when it converts carbs to glycogen for energy.

I have gained as much as 4lbs over a weekend - without changing the amount of calories I eat, just by eating more carbs. And then I lose it over the course of the week and drop an additional pound or two.

You didn't mention if your weight was measured on your home scales or the doctors - when you noted the weight gain. I know that my home scales do not measure my weight the same as the doctor's. So I go by my home scales, since I don't see the doc but once a month.

It may just be that it is a different scale. That is why I didn't even buy a scale. Weigh the same day that you go back to the doctor to compare.

Yes it does happen. It will come back off and then some. Don't freak out.

I'm 3 weeks out and I "gained" about 1.5 lbs and haven't lost anything in almost a week. It's not possible that I've gained any real weight, I'm not consuming more than 500 calories a day. I guess I'm just rolling with it, see what happens over time!

Thank you everybody!!! I literally freaked out. I've been scared of eating because I've been having this nightmare that I am going to end up stretching my stomach out.... CRAZY :(

Everyone take a deep breath and repeat after me: It's going to be OK.

This is perfectly normal. Your body is simply trying to figure out what the heck just happened to it, and is doing it's own version of freaking out. Just follow your surgeon's instructions, stay off the scale for awhile if you can, and trust the process. Things will start moving again. And eventually, you'll get to place when you'll pay no mind to the occasional stall, safe in the knowledge that the stall will end.

Be well…

I too see a weight gain when I eat too many carbs. Thanks for the explanation joatsaint!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
