Which PPI and What Dose do you take?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I was sleeved by Dr. Aceves in Mexicali and he gave me 20mg of Pantozol to take each day which is the same as Nexium per my notes/instructions. But he only gave me a 1 months supply (but instructed me to be on a PPI for atleast 3 months).

I went to my PCP today for follow up and he wanted to start me on 40mg of Nexium, which is going to be $150 a month (EEK!!!). I have no idea why he wants to up me to 40mg if Dr. Aceves has me on 20mg of the Pantozol.

Soooo...Which PPI are you taking? What is the Dose? Was it prescribed or over the counter?

Trying to find a "cheaper" way to do this and don't want the extra dosage if not needed.

One Prilosec every morning does the trick for me. If I miss just one day, boy do I regret it!

2weeks post op needed a PPI. Dr prescribed 40 ml omniprazle. After 30 days I called him and said to reduce to 20 and see what happens. I continued on 20 and now at 7 months out I am trying to wean myself off of them. I usually can go 2-3 days withou and no heartburn. I will take a tums or rolaid if I get a little indigestion.

Trying so hard to get off of many of my medications.

I do Omaprazole (generic Prilosec) twice a day. I get them at Costco...it comes 3 packs of 14 pills each (42 pills) for around $16. So that's a 3 week supply.

What you experienced is the American healthcare system.

You can probably find something OTC that works. I take nexium 40mg but my insurance covers it.

Hey there Seattlesportsfan!

Tips:

1. Carry your heating pad.

2. I highly recommend the Italian restaurant that is on the property at the hotel for your last meal (I heard the Steakhouse is good too).

3. If you are in pain, just tell them and they will give you pain meds.

4. There are only 2 English channels on the TV, so take something like a book or a Kindle or something to keep you entertained.

5. It's HOT there... so if you walk outside, don't stay out too long.

6. Hold on, on Day 2...the pain is going to suck, but on Day 3 you'll feel much better!

7. For whoever is going with you, the restaurant in the hospital is good per my husband, and there is a mall that is only about a half mile away that has a food court. There's also a chinese restaurant right across the street.

I had a fantastic experience there, and I'm sure you will too! Good luck! Feel free to message me any specific questions you have ;)

You can take the over the counter PPI instead. Just take two of them to equal 40mg. You can verify this with your local pharmacist.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
