Gluten free, sugar free, fat free OH MY!

Recommended Posts

I'm so lost! Feeling a bit "dumb" at this point. Surgery was May 28th. 25 pounds down so far YEAH! HOWEVER, solid foods can begin July 1st for me (per Dr.) I guess I thought we could eat "normal food" just a lot smaller portions and of course keeping Proteins and calories and Sat fats in mind. I have bought 3 cook books for "Life after Surgery" and I see that using different spices and fat free sour cream, almond milk etc is what I will do but I'm I missing something? Are we to aim at ALL sugar free Fat free etc??? and what heck cheese(s) falls into that category? What about Pasta? I went blind reading all the boxes in the pasta aisle. More than ready to leave the all liquid diet SO MISSING FLAVORS (will never drink chocolate or strawberry shakes AGAIN!) however at least I know what Im aiming at everyday. Getting scarred for July 1st. Here I thought I'd have a Sea Scallop that day...NOT!

Why can't you have a sea scallop that day? I have been doing the same thing and basically my doctor told me my percentages of fat and carbs to the amount of calories I can have in a day. I am going to work off of that, stay within the perimeters but enjoy the food. I will use low fat when I can and substitute if possible. But I will enjoy my food and stay within the calories.

What she gave me was Trans Fat: 0 Sat Fat less than 8 Cholesterol less than 200mg serving. I figure the veggie burger route and steamed veggies, would be a step in correct direction. PLUS this 2 to 3oz BUILT IN control system hee hee can't hurt.

Remember you need Protein first, then complex carbs next. Some meals, once you get in the 3 oz of Protein (like chicken), you may not have room for anything else. Veggies need to be really well cooked...remember your stomach can't break down raw veggies for quite a while.

Keep it simple...simple protein (like chicken, fish), with simple, well cooked complex carb (like say really well steamed broccoli or boiled squash).

You can have a scallop...not sure why you can't.

My surgery was 5 wks ago. I'm on regular food now. I eat normal food just very little of it. However I have not had bread of any kind (i only ate wheat or multi grain) since I started the pre op diet. I figure I have do little space don't want to waste it on bread.

Shrimp and scallops have been on the menu from the time I could eat solid food. Yummy!

When you first start to eat solid food just take slow and carefully. Think of yourself as a baby. What would you feed a baby who is just starting to eat real food? At almost four months post op I can eat pretty much what I want but find I have to focus on the Protein to get enough. I do eat carbs but not anywhere near as much as before. I also try to eat salad a lot cuz I actually crave it! Who'd a thunk? I used to be such a chocoholic. Try to stay away from processed sugar because it might make you feel sick and if not, it will slow your weight loss, at least that's what my NUT told me.

pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
