does too much MoM make you hungry?

Recommended Posts

Hi.. I was wondering if there is such a thing as too much milk of magnesia..?

my story.. (*trying to make it not gross..*)

I am a little over 5 months post op.. last month I had to go through an Impaction.. and it was horrible! I went one whole week without "going".. and then there was blood.. that freaked me out.. googled a lot.. and ended up giving myself an enema.. and suppositories and .........

In the process I hurt myself.. and everytime i tried to go.. it was painful.. and always accomapnied with blood.. I should have seen a doctor.. I know.. but I was out of state.. and did not have much of a choice but deal with the pain..

during this incident.. i was taking 3 dulcolax stool softners everyday.. and after.. i was taking 4tbsp of MoM.. every night.. for one week.. untill the blood stopped... and then reduced the dose to 2tbsp..

Now.. I notice that I am hungry a lot.. when compared to before this incident.. i eat an hard boiled egg at 8am.. drink 16oz of fluids at 9.. and i am hungry again at 10.. before.. i would not feel hungry atleast until 12:30... now i have to eat every 2 hours.. and it scares me..

I tried not taking MoM for two days.. and well.. i did not go.. and that mortifies me.. i dont want to have to deal with another Impaction.. ever!

I have increased my Fiber intake after this too.. but still wondering.. should i stop MoM for a week.. and see what happens?

Impaction was blood - an enema.. and suppositories and .........

avanti

not medical person here - so i can't/shouldn't/won't tell you what to do, i can just advise you about seeing a PHP

If you don't have a regular doc - get one - for general life "situations" (cold et al)

in my "opinion" taking too much MOM can't be good

theres a time period amount of days you can take MOM - sounds like you've surpassed that???

good for you on losing 68.5 lbs!!!!

hope you get help with your situation soon, and you'll feel better

good luck

kathy

Yes you can take too much MOM and it can cause issues. However, I have never ever heard of a patient complaint regarding hunger because of taking MOM. That is unless because you evacuated your bowels, you felt better and now want to eat. Have you tried Miralax? It may be more gentle for you. I suggest you talk to your PCP about this or call your surgeons office. They will point you in the right direction. Oh, and make sure you are drinking plenty of Water. Good luck!

I think you should go see a doctor. If you're out of town then go to the local walk in clinic. The web and this forum are great resources but a doctor would be able to properly diagnose and help your conditions. Good luck!

My theory? Going into the sixth month brings on a little more hunger for a lot of us the stomach is "relaxing" a bit and the ghrelin production is being produced in slightly higher volumes in other areas of your body.

Oh yes by the way never "dis impact" yourself you can cause damage for sure!

And veggies don't forget your veggies!

Thank you all..

I spoke with my surgeon and nut yesterday.. and well.. after the first five or so minutes of what was I thinking speech from both of them..

They want me to increase my daily calories to 1000/1100.. (I'm currently at 600/700 per day) I also have a RMR test as part of my 6 month post op visit.. so we'll know for sure how much of my metabolism i've screwd up.

And as Laura mentioned.. entering into the sixth month... I am bound to feel hungerier than previous months..and they have suggested me some Fiber supplements.. and gradually reduce the dependancy on MoM.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
