Hi everyone! My mother is getting the sleeve done this year. She is attending her seminar June 22, 2013. She is self pay and she is very worried about the expense of the pre-op testing, and the kinds of testing required. She is also worried about her age and how it will effect her recovery and weight loss. She is a nurse and knows the ins and outs of the testing I've told her about seeing in many stories on this sight. Now I'm afaid she will back out of the surgery altogether. I am really just hoping for some first hand experiences that will help her make her decision and put her mind at ease. She asked me if I could find any information from people around her age. If you can offer any support I would greatly appreciate it!

I am 63 and was sleeved on 6-4. Generally I have done well, so age is NOT a barrier! Sadly all the pre-op preps are needed so that the surgeon does not get surprised (in a bad way).

I'm 51, was sleeved at 50 last December, and I'm also an RN. Since your mom is a nurse, she understands the need for pre-op testing, though not every doc requires the same thing. Lab work and psyche eval are pretty standard. I had a gall bladder ultrasound and a barium swallow, some people have UGI endoscopy, though I think that's less common. It all depends on the physician and the patient's health issues. I also had to go to physical therapy session for exercises, (a total waste of time, in my opinion) and nutrition class as well as a pre-op class with the nurse. I'm happy I did this, and feel like I'm getting younger every day.

Age 57 and my recovery has been great! I did have a lot of pre-op testing - due to age and medical conditions - but that was O.K. with me :)

I was sleeved September 26th at 53. I had a little bit of breathing trouble when I was in recovery until the anesthesia wore off. They ended up having to give me oxygen until I started breathing better, but other than that I did really good.

I was a few months shy of 51. I had an easy, easy time. Surgery was three years ago last week. That said, I had NO health issues, so I'm sure that played a part in my quick recovery. Good luck....I have no regrets, never have. It was a great decision.

Thank you everyone for your support! I know Mother will feel so much better knowing she isn't alone. I feel better knowing all of you did so well, hopefully mother will have a easy time of it as well. She understands what the testing is for and knows that its necessary but she is worried about the expense. Ive told her to invest in her future and that it will be good for her. So far I haven't heard anyone say that they regret it.

I was 59 when my surgery was done last September! High blood pressure, bad knees, and sleep apnea plagued my life but thanks to the surgery..NO MORE! I have so much energy and have not felt this good in years! Tell her to go for it! She has everything to gain!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
