Gastric Sleeve Surgery Cost (Mexico and United States) Self Pay

Recommended Posts

Hi Sleever Peeps,

I am signed up for my surgery date. I have already jumped through the various hoops/dr. visits/blood tests (approx $2000 out of pocket).

I am freaking out a bit because I am paying 100% out of pocket. I have insurance but I am self-employed and there are NO policies that exist across the entire insurance industry that offer WLS. :-(

I am wondering what people have been paying Mexico and here in the US if they were paying out of pocket.

Anyone want to share with me what they have experienced?

My surgery is supposed to be in Atlanta and the package price (not including pre-op dr. visits and blood work) is $18,800 (EEK).

Thanks in advance for you posts! Melissa73

Dr. jaime Ponce de leon is $5500

Dr. Fernando Garcia is $4700

Dr. Ariel Ortiz is $6500

Dr. Guillermo Alvarez is $8700

Dr. Alberto Aceves is $8750

Those are the prices that I have seen. It includes the pre-op and post-op tests, the hospital stay, the hotel stay, and the whole surgical team expenses. I hink Dr. Aceves is the only one that keeps you in a hospital the whole time.. If you type any one of these Drs. names in the search bar above and select forum in the little box, it will give you posts about peoples experiences with them. It does cost a lot less in Mexico.

Those mexico prices ppasjm lists are about what I'd been seeing too.. I paid $4500 but I paid in December and price went up to $4700 since then. I had Dr's Ismael Cabrerra and Lousiana Valenzuela and was sleeved at MiDoctor. In Mexico, most of your packages will include ground transportation, two night hotel stay, two night hospital stay, preop EKG and blood testing and of course the actual surgery. There are doctors in Louisiana, Texas, and Nevada who I believe are under 10K but I don't know exactly what that includes, I think the one in Nevada might be a day surgery but I'm not sure.

Wow Melissa! These Mexico prices really gives you something to think about!!! Even with flight costs you probably wouldn't pay near 18000!!

Realize too that the hospital has a financial counselor who can help you with financial costs (even writing some of them off). I am getting a 25% discount by paying the hospital before they ever bill my insurance (lowering my out of pocket). I was shocked and asked if they did this for everyone and was told that normally 30-45% of the bill for a self pay patient can be written off if a large payment of 800-1000 dollars is paid at admission. Something to think about. I am so blessed that I have insurance that will consider covering the surgery, we will see, have yet to have my approval, at least I know that cash is option if I needed to.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
