5 days post op-afraid it didnt work! Feeling TOO normal.

Recommended Posts

I'm a newbie, first posting. I've been reading the boards for months, but never posted until now. I was sleeved on 6-11, and am 5 days post op. Everything went amazingly smoothly. Very little pain, I didn't even need pain meds, just Tylenol. I didn't have any nausea, which is a miracle for me because everything makes me nauseous. I only vomited once in the hospital, after my upper GI, that stuff was nasty. My fear is that I feel TOO normal. I keep waiting for something to go wrong. I have been able to get in my Protein and liquid requirements since I got home two days ago with no problems. I am on liquids only, and have only done Protein Shakes, crystal light, broth and yogurt. But today I drank too fast, instead of sipping, on accident from old habits, and it didn't hurt. It does hurt when I first swallow, as it hits my stomach, but that is all. I can eat 5 ounces of yogurt, a tablespoon at a time, and a bunch of liquid with no problems. I shouldn't be able to do that yet right? I'm definatly not hungry, no hunger at all, but other than that, and my sore stomach, everything feels the same as before surgery. I'm guessing the problems with eating will come later, when I progress to solids?

Experiences vary from person to person but yours sounds similar to mine. At first I could only drink half an ounce of Water but was able to progress to a full ounce then a few gulps at a time. Never had any issue with Protein Shakes and can drink one now as fast as I could preop.

Don't push your luck, however. Now is not a good time to test whether you can eat actual food. I hope that you continue to have a noneventful recovery.

I thought it was odd too, but it was on my list of approved foods for the first 2 weeks liquid stage. They actually gave it to me in the hospital the day after surgery. Like you said, every Dr is different.

Be careful with the yogurt. Did they not want you on liquids for 2 weeks? Your choice either way but it's good to hear all is well :)

ps. nevermind I just saw your post above :D

I was also sleeved 5 days ago. I find I can drink and eat and still feel somewhat hungry. I don't know if it's actual hunger (my stomach is growling), or if its just settling or gas or what-not. I do still have some pain when I stand, but it's getting better. My doc also said I can have yogurt. I've been eating yogurt, sugar free pudding, cream Soup, etc. (not all at once, of course LOL)

I'm hoping this isnt a hunger feeling. I really dont want to desire food anymore...and at the moment I do :/

I say you are very lucky with things going so well. You should be thrilled. I went thru 10 days of pure hell. The only thing I would say is stop eating yogurt. You can cause a leak if u don't maintain liquids only. Even if your Dr said its OK I would not drink anything that does not go thru a strainer for 3 weeks. I new of a women who had one spoon of yogurt and caused a leak in her stomach and was in the hospital for 2 months on a feeding tube. But other than that its awesome u feel so good. I was sleeved 5 weeks ago and have lost 30 lbs. Keep up the good work but don't let the fact u feel so great fool u. You had a major surgery so just be careful.

I was sleeved on 6/11 too. I am allowed to eat yogurt. Finally did today and it is fine. I think some people just vary. Count yourself lucky.

You sound like me - I was up and back to my old routine of life by 3 days post op. At 5 days post-op I did a huge grocery shopping trip just like I do every week. No pain meds needed, no throwing up (I am 12 days post op now and I haven't thrown up ONCE the entire time), no nausea...I thank my lucky stars every day that I feel so darn good!!

You have to remember that your stomach was just cut in half, the nerve endings were also cut so you may not be experiencing much feeling but that doesnt mean things arent happening. Just take it easy and follow the rules no matter how normal you feel. Congrats!

I too feel the same, although I'm on a clear liquid only diet. I have no desire to cheat because I want to heal properly. I keep feeling like I'm an anomaly because I can get all my Water in plus my broth and Jello or whatever, with no problem. I count myself lucky and look forward to my first post op appt. this is the nutrition class and release to yogurts and Beans and whatnot. It'll come in time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
