For me that was really disturbing. I hate needles and now I'm nervous about my fist fill- I guess I'll have to keep my eyes shut. I then went to go see the banding video- I made it 10 seconds before closing the window.

Sorry - I thought it would have the opposite effect! You should know that I've already sprayed her skin with some numbing medicine so she doesn't feel the stick. There is sound to the video so you can hear there is no moaning in agony!! Plus, it only lasts 8 seconds...

That's about what it looks like for me too, except I am all red from the freeze spray. There is almost no pain at all, just the weird sensation of the port being manipulated. ~Mandy

I didn't look when I got my fill. I just kept my eyes closed and it was over before I knew it.

My fills are done under flouro (only way the ins will pay) and I love to watch the screen while it's being done. ~Mandy

Being that I work on a bariatric surgery unit I have watched the surgeries for both banding and RNY but never had a clue what was entailed for a fill. I mean I knew what they did but really thought it was a little more involved. Was way too cool to watch.

Dr C. Thanks for the educational experience. Just cant wait to be banded and layin there having my own fill.

Yes, thanks for the instructional video. My surgeon doesn't use floro and I have been really nervous about it. Glad to hear that it doesn't hurt due to the freeze spray. And it's a quick hit - in and out. Excellent!

My first fill is 1/25 and I have been dreaming about it. There's only one kind of poke I like, and it doesn't come from a needle!

Dear Dr. C. I just viewed the video of a fill , I am glad to know they numb it with a freezing solution be cause I feel I need a fill. I was banded Nov. 21 06 and lost 9 lbs at my 2 week visit and I told my Dr. I dont feel any restriction at all , I asked if the band could have slipped , He said no. I stayed on full liquids until Xmas and went right on regular foods because I dont feel restricted at all and I have never felt ill or nauseated with any food I have eaten since I am not on full liquids anymore. I feel like I never was banded have you had a patient like me ? I see my Dr. tomorrow on the 5th of Jan. and I have gained 2 lbs and am very scared he is going to tell me I am a failure. I am also going to have a counseling appt. tomorrow about my attitude toward food and a lot of stree I am under in my family life. I started out at 253 on surgery day, my highest was 262 10 days preop due to liquids and low carbs. Dr. C. have I hurt myself by not going on pureed foods? please respond to me when it is convenient for you , it will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you Patty in Pa. also known as makemelean

It is very normal not to have restriction at this point. It takes 3-5 fills to get there - just be patient and follow the diet no more cheating!

I was surprised to hear that you use a numbing agent before a fill. I have had 2 fills by my Dr. and I can tell you the 1st was a little more painful than I had anticipated. No numbing agent, just jamed the needle in. The 2nd was not painful at all and was done almost the same as the 1st. I am a big wuss and if I had known what to expect with a fill, I probably would have chicken'd out. This information was good to know. Maybe I can get my Dr. to use a numbing agent. Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
