The Constipation is not unusual. However, my doctor said Benefiber was more of a long-term solution. There are many short-term solutions as well. I used Smooth Move, which is a tea. Probably others on here have other suggestions. For me, the constipation stage didn't last long but it was a challenge. Good luck and hang in there.

Miralax is a great product to help with regularity, but sometimes takes 3-4 days to work, if at all. if you have any immediate issue then a good approach to unplugging is to take either a suppository like ducolax or fleets. Milk of magnesia is also very good as well as mineral oil for triggering immediate relief. Once you are past any immediate issues, some less forceful remedies like miralax and/or chia seeds will help. I take both miralax and chia seeds and do not have any Constipation issues even though my diet is mostly Protein. I do have to say both are needed for a reliable "good" BM. If I only take chia seeds only only miralax in isolation from one another I usually have a much smaller BM or none at all. There is satisfaction that puts. Smile on your face from. Good high quality BM. Lol. I am sure you know what I mean folks. Everyone who is a post op has heir own BM story!!

This is not medical advice, just observations from my own experience. As a society we have been conditioned to think we must have a BM every day. Just because you haven't gone, doesn't mean you are constipated. Are you feeling full? Trying to go and nothing's happening? That's Constipation. I am on my pre-op diet. No BM for a week. Went this morning and it was normal in consistency and effort, just a much smaller amount. My husband would have run to the store for laxatives if he hadn't gone for a day! Lol

While everyone is different, all I am saying is that you shoukd consider letting your body talk to you. If you feel ok and are taking in all your liquids, your body will let you know when it's time to go :)

Exactly.. You aren't eating so don't expect to eliminate much. Also, don't forget that pain meds REALLY mess with BM's

I'd echo CCarterRN's comment that we are all different and have to learn to listen to our bodies. Even while I was in the Hospital for my three days, they wanted to watch a clock, my body obviously has never learned about clocks, when it needed to do it's thing it did it regardless of the digits or hands on the wall...and yes in my case boy did the pain meds do a number on BM...

I'm pre-sleeve but i used to have some problems in this area. I started taking phillips colon health and nary a problem. It's a probiotic. I know there are chewables out there. Maybe that would help.

Hi' date=' I would likr to try the chia seeds, but how do I use them. I mean do I eat them or diluten or what please let me know thanks.[/quote']

It is best to let them soak in Water for 20 minutes until they gel and ten add to something like yogurt or Protein shake. You can also add them directly to yogurt for a nice crunch (think: grape nuts), but in my experience, they will not deliver the same BM effectiveness. Some people also like to gel and chill them in the fridge overnight. In addition to Fiber, they deliver so much in additional nutrients such as Omega3 and Protein. Two Tbsp of chia seed is usually the recommended serving size.

I bought them online from an organic seller at Amazon for several months. Good seeds and fairly economic. 2 lb bag is 25 plus shipping. Sellers (young husband and wife) were also real friendly and always responsive to my questions.

Now I see costco is selling organic Chia seeds in 2 lb bag for 12. I cannot tell the taste difference between the two or the bodily effectiveness. I use 2 TBSP of seeds helped in 10 oz of Water mixed with Protein Shake powder every morning. It is part of my morning ritual.

I suppose if you are conscientious about helping out the small and independent sellers, you should. Fair trade and all that. However, I see the costco seeds as 2x more economical and no shipping costs. So in the end it came down to cost for me.

I do chia seeds and miralax daily and get the results I want. I am not sure if miralax daily is overkill, but if I do not take them daily, I do not see any action on the throne!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
