I've started mixing my shakes using almond milk (SoDelicious brand' date=' vanilla flavor, with added protein). I like the creamy texture better than either Water or regular milk.[/quote']

I used almond milk as well. But my nut said not to cuz it doesn't have as much Protein as much as skim milk. This is the only thing I didn't care to listen to. It's got way more Calcium and I really need that. Also almond milk taste better. :)

I think something may be wrong with me... I HATE Protein shakes. I'm on the 3rd Protein brand' date=' and it's disgusting! My first shake was an EPIC fail as I made it with milk that I hadn't realized had gone "bad". Three gulps in, and I about lost my cookies! Yesterday, I tried a new brand, different flavor, GOOD milk and whil I managed to drink it, all I could think about was how gross it was. And, the thought of drinking another has made me nauseated... HELP! I have GOT to find a way to get all the protein in. I'm still in the pre-op phase, and I'm having surgery in 10 days. My fear is that if I don't like them now, then I'm SURE not going to like them post surgery! ANYONE????[/quote']

I agree with you, all shakes make me gag. I bought a case of the Premier at Sam's and choked down 2/day for pre op, I preferred to drink skim milk separate from shakes because the milk was enjoyable and helped with the hunger.

Another suggestion is to order samples online. Nashua Nutrition has $1.99/ea. and you can try lots of brands/flavors. GNC will let you sample their ready mades too.

Put it in the freezer to make it thicker, add a flavor to help, whatever works. You've only got to get through it for a short time.

Post surgery might not be for long either. Plus your taste buds may like shakes better.

I am 4 wks post op, and am completely off of shakes. Good riddance!!! Only drank 1/2 to 1 shake a day as needed after week 1. 3 cups of milk a day, primarily an Atkins based intake of lean meat to hit my numbers (74 today) and a bite of fruit or veggie when possible.

No one can know if your intake of protein will progress quickly or not, but just trying to give you hope that you can get through this.

Talk to your Nut, they will help you come up with a plan. Best of luck. You can do this!!!

I used Bariatric Advantage powdered shakes with skim milk. Get a blender (the Bullet is easy to use). Add a bit of ice, the skim milk and powder and it makes a good tasting Protein Shake. I used the Choc and vanilla- orange flavors. Also the vanilla powder is good mixed with some flavorings (I used coconut and pineapple for a great piña colada). unjury powder is good too: strawberry sorbet can be mixed with sugar-free Jello for a good protein snack. If you are caught out, walgreeen's usually has sugar-free muscle milk in the refrig case. You can also use Atkins Shakes as they are sugar-free and have 10-14 grams of protein.

If you are in Chicago, I know a sleever who, as a prof chef, has started her own company making pre-op Protein Shakes and broths. Also post-op smoothies and Soups. Her stuff is great! I only used the Bariatric Advantage when I traveled or in a pinch.

Also, you are drinking broths, right? They will help. You need the salt! If you don't want to use the instant or canned, you can go to your local Panera bread, or other restaurant and get chicken noodle Soup -- and just request the broth. I did this a lot while traveling and had no trouble getting just the broth (must be a lot of people making this request). You can do the same with broth-based vegetable and French onion soup. It helped me when I went to restaurants with friends -- gave me something to eat.

Hang in there. It really will be worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
